There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom Review

There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom
Average Reviews:

Only two books I have ever read in my life have made me cry, and this book is one of them.
There are so many emotions, and Bradley is practically a real life kid. Louis Sachar is one of the most talented and original authors today.
There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom will touch you, even if you're a tough one---like Bradley. He's a "monster", he knows he is. Until Carla, the new school councellor, comes along and shows him that he can change. Even when no one else thinks he can---even when he himself doesn't believe he can ever be anything else.
(Just don't be mislead by the title or anything. The book's not really exactly about a boy in the girl's bathroom. Louis Sachar is one of the best writers in the world, but I've found the he isn't all that great at picking out titles for his stories.)
And, by the way, very few books can really make a person actually laugh. Louis Sachar has the gift of humor, and adds entertainment and fun to this book.
You should definetly read it.

Hold That Thought For Kids: Capturing Precious Memories through Fun Questions, Images, & Conversations (Hold That Thought Keepsake Coversation Journals) Review

Hold That Thought For Kids: Capturing Precious Memories through Fun Questions, Images, and Conversations (Hold That Thought Keepsake Coversation Journals)
Average Reviews:

I received this book as a gift from a teacher girlfriend. At first I was overwhelmed-it's a big book. My friend told me to trust her, pick a page (any page), gather my kids and start. I am glad I did.
I started with an interview titled "All the Senses". As an introduction, my 5 and 7 year olds and I talked about what our senses were. Then I interviewed them, writing down both of their answers to questions about their favorites smells, sounds, sensations, sights...in the same book. The kids liked having this "talking time" with me. After a few minutes, my husband, overhearing us, stopped doing the dishes and joined us so he could listen too.
In our family, the temptation is to just get things done in the evening. This book helps my husband and me spend just 10 or 20 precious minutes really talking and communicating with the kids. It's easy. It's fun and together we're creating a keepsake treasure. I recommend it to parents everywhere.

My 3-year-old is learning so much from this book. It has a little bit of everything in it: tracing, writing, math, colors, scissor skills. I just wish it was bigger or the person who gave it to me would have given me 10 more just like it! My child especially loved the scissor exercises. We are getting the Carson Dellosa "Scissor Skills" book soon! This book has really improved her control and patience in basic motor skills.

Summer Bridge Activities Grades 1-2 Review

Summer Bridge Activities Grades 1-2
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Summer Bridge has been a fairly decent way for my daughter to keep her skills fresh over the summer, it really wasn't challenging enough to hold her interest. She finished each day's work in about 10 minutes, and said she found the material boring. I think it'd be more useful to a child who needed a little remedial work before starting second grade. Much of the material was actually work that she'd done in kindergarten, and it's not as though my daughter's a prodigy; she's on a par with other children in a parochial school.
The other thing that annoyed me was incredibly sloppy editing - sorry, folks, but "gnat" is not spelled "knat", and there were a number of exercises that were misprinted. Since this isn't an inexpensive book, I don't appreciate spending money and finding it full of errors. Also, the instructions for some of the exercises were pretty unclear - there were a couple where I had to check the answers page to be sure of what my daughter needed to do. I'll hesitate before buying the same series next year, even though the concept is a sound one.

Curious Kids' Activity Guide to Michigan (Curious Kids Guides) Review

Curious Kids' Activity Guide to Michigan (Curious Kids Guides)

We bought this book to use as part of our homeschooling unit on our homestate of Michigan. I have looked through several other books for kids about Michigan and I must say how impressed I am with this one. My 8 yr old daughter, 12 year old son and 14 yr old son all really like it. The actual color photos are great as some books just use illustrations. The book is written so a younger child can read it, but older kids can still enjoy it. We can't wait to take some of the day trips that the book recommends.

The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections Review

The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination and Nurture Family Connections
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought this was a sweet book, and a pleasant read. Amanda Soule is a wonderful writer. I was a little disappointed that there were no new ideas presented here though. I felt like I was reading the same Waldorf family book I've read several times before. People say "everything has been done before", but I feel that authors can still incorporate new ideas or put their own twist on things. I did not see this here.
I was also disappointed with the craft projects. Aside from the fact that many were the same projects found all over the internet and in many other craft books, I found that most of them were projects geared towards adults with small touches added by children. I was expecting more projects actually for children, or where children played a much bigger role.
I think this would be a perfect book for someone who is new to Waldorf and Montessori philosophy and was looking for ways to incorporate these philosophies into their family life, or for someone who is looking for a simple, pleasant read paired with beautiful pictures. If you've been involved in simple family living for quite some time and are looking for something new, I would look elsewhere.

I have been using the summer bridge activity books for both of my children for the last couple of years. I think the books for primary grade children could be a little more challenging in the math area. Once you get to the 3rd-4th grade level they seem to be pretty close to school curriculum. If you are thinking of buying this for your k-3rd grade student you may find the need to supplement the math activities.

Summer Bridge Activities: 3rd to 4th Grade Review

Summer Bridge Activities: 3rd to 4th Grade
Average Reviews:

Engaging for the child. Mostly math and language activities of differnt types, styles, and complexities. Tasks get progressively harder toward the new school year. A good general purpose review and prep to keep skills fresh and build a few new ones before schools starts in August. Moderately well-illustrated. Encourages independent reading and offers a suggested reading list--though parents should review any of these books for appropriateness for their child. Books off this list that increase vocabulary and reading skill without frustrating your child are also very appropriate. The key is for the child to enjoy reading challenging materials--let your child choose what interests them as much as possible.

Take It to Your Seat Math Centers, Grades K-1 Review

Take It to Your Seat Math Centers, Grades K-1
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The take it to your seat books have all been great & the kids seem to especially enjoy this one. I needed something hands-on for my 6 year old but my 4.5 year old just loves the activities as well. There are 14 different activities inside, quite easy to just tear out & prepare. I used brown paper bage to glue each cover to, the instructions I glued on the back of the bag and placed the cut out material for the activity inside. I put the whole lot in a free choice box for them to choose from and I find them regularly pulling out several of the bags to do - they really enjoy them and it reinforces the maths concept in a concrete way. The illustrations are attractive and a good size. My eldest really likes the self-check answer gauges on the back of each game & it frees me up to do other things if needed. I prepared the whole book of activities in one afternoon. Well worth the money and have bought more from the series.
