Great Map Mysteries: 18 Stories and Maps to Build Geography and Map Skills (Grades 3-6) Review

Great Map Mysteries: 18 Stories and Maps to Build Geography and Map Skills (Grades 3-6)

This book is awesome! The students love reading about and trying to solve the mysteries. They get so focused on the mystery that they are suddently teaching themselves the map skills.
The stories in the book are entertaining and my class and I have had a lot of laughs during Social Studies. I highly recommend this book to teachers of Social Studies in grades four and five. It may be a little difficult for third graders and too easy for sixth grade.

It provides wonderful reading strategies that encompass all grades and can be adapted to different subject areas. 25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6) Review

25 Mini-Lessons for Teaching Writing (Grades 3-6)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is fantastic! Our son (age 9) is extremely bright and a good reader and has always been an excellent student. Now in 3rd grade, there is an emphasis on writing in his classroom and for some reason he developed what the teacher described as a "mental block" about writing, because he didn't know how to get started. He would get anxious and upset and end up in tears, saying "I don't know what to write."
I bought a few different books to help with the challenge, and this book was by far the most valuable. It got him past his mental block. He and I do one mini-lesson each week at home, on the weekends when we are relaxed. The mini-lessons are short, focused and fun. In just a few short weeks, our son has made progress both at home and in the classroom. I even consulted with a professional tutor in our area, who said that we were on the right track by using this book - she was very impressed with it.
Thank you Adele Fiderer!

I bought this book last year while working on a unit plan for my student teaching. I really needed some creative new ideas for teaching literature and I found some really awesome activities! Although this book is recommended for grades k-6, most of the activities are easily adaptable up to grade 8 or higher. I taught two of these lessons with eighth graders last year and they loved them! It is by far the best teacher resource book I own-- and I have many.

The Original Summer Bridge Activities: 2nd to 3rd Grade
Average Reviews:

I have been using the summer bridge activity books for both of my children for the last couple of years. I think the books for primary grade children could be a little more challenging in the math area. Once you get to the 3rd-4th grade level they seem to be pretty close to school curriculum. If you are thinking of buying this for your k-3rd grade student you may find the need to supplement the math activities.

Acting Class: Take a Seat Review

Acting Class: Take a Seat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We lost a legendary teacher last week. Milton Katselas passed away on October 24th 2008 at the age of 75. This book (finally available to non-students) represents the wisdom he gathered and techniques he perfected over his many years of teaching. If you're serious about acting (or any other creative or artistic pursuit for that matter) you really must take the time to read, understand and apply this book.
In the time I studied in his classes I had the opportunity to see a great many actors and directors overcome obstacles that stood in the way of their talent. And after a while I was surprised to find that there were often similarities to the challenges they faced. This book could be called a compilation of the remedies that Milton discovered.
The core of Milton's technique is The Checklist. Tried and tested techniques for breaking down a scene and unlocking its secrets. He shares this along with many other common pitfalls to watch out for.
Much of Acting Class is written in the form of transcribed critiques from actual classes and because of this, the message may not be immediately clear to those who haven't sat in his class themselves. I studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse for three years and I can tell you that over time I saw a great many students learn these exact lessons. For this reason I can assure you that, however oblique it may seem on first read, the lessons are in this text.
This is not a dry, dense, academic book. Milton gets right to it. Acting is not some vague, formless art in his view. It's a skill that can be learned, exercised and perfected.

Previously only available to Katselas' students at the prestigious Beverly Hills Playhouse, Acting Class presents the concepts and methods that have helped lead a generation of actors to success on stage, in cinema, and on television. Now for the first time, this all-encompassing book is available to the general public, taking readers and sitting them in the legendary acting class of Milton Katselas, where he not only covers techniques and methods, but also includes valuable discussions on the attitude any artist needs to fulfill his or her dream.
