My 3-year-old is learning so much from this book. It has a little bit of everything in it: tracing, writing, math, colors, scissor skills. I just wish it was bigger or the person who gave it to me would have given me 10 more just like it! My child especially loved the scissor exercises. We are getting the Carson Dellosa "Scissor Skills" book soon! This book has really improved her control and patience in basic motor skills.

Simple Steps Review

This book explains the key areas of development as a child grows from infancy to two years old. Activities and games to aid in each area of development are presented for each age group. This book is helpful to parents when they run out of ideas for keeping their children busy and happy. Some of the activities, such as dancing with your child, seem obvious; however, a parent might overlook such activities. The book also presents ideas for stimulating development that had never occurred to me. Although the book makes mention of many of the toys you can purchase, it also explains how to make toys yourself and how to design activities for your child using materials commonly found in the home. Safety issues are thoroughly addressed.

Cut and Create At the Zoo Review

Cut and Create At the Zoo
Average Reviews:

We have already used this wonderful tool in my classroom and the students love it. It is a hands-on way to assess their ability to follow written and graphic directions. I highly recommend all the books in that series. My one negative comment would be that it is marketed for K-2. I honestly do not feel any kindergartener would be able to complete the tasks alone. It should be geared for grades 2-3.

Hand-Shaped Art: Start with the Shape of a Young Child's Hand Review

Hand-Shaped Art: Start with the Shape of a Young Child's Hand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hand-shaped Art inspires, and, that is its incredible attribute. Looking at one idea, I was pleasantly bombarded with possibilities, especially, creative, interactive bulletin board ideas and writing assignments. Too many teachers fill bulletin boards with glossy posters. This book lets the children participate.
Layout and art are superb, simple, ready to use, and that, my friend, saves time. You will be glad you spent the money on this book for it is full of ideas you can't see until your imagination takes over.
Take, for example, one hand makes a ship's sail, but what a journey it will be when you include travel plans in creative writing, science of the stars and the ocean, attendance count, lunch count, classroom managment, and scary creatures bordering the bulletin board. I saw a sail made from one hand and then...See what I mean? Keep a pen handy for all the ideas that will flood your landscape. You'll never go back to glossy, boring posters again.

Sequencing: Cut and Paste Activities Review

Sequencing: Cut and Paste Activities

I bought these for my 5 year old to practice logic and sequencing.
Several are hard to figure out (for mom :)
Instead of cutting and pasting, I cut out each sequence and paper-clipped, so we could practice again.
They are not cards, just plain paper, so will tear easily.

How did the caterpillar become a butterfly? Ask your students to put a sequence of four pictures in the right order and they'll tell you. It's just one of the 20 activities in Sequencing, Cut and Paste Activities many of which are open ended, that invite your kindergarten and first grade students to cut and paste a series of simple, charming illustrations.

Some of the picture stories included are:

a dog washing his car
a rabbit eating an ice cream cone
a bear going skiing
as well as a child opening a present
a child building a sand castle

Teachers can use this book to:

encourage children to explore the various ways the pictures on certain pages may be sequenced

My Book of Pasting: Jigsaw Puzzles (Kumon Workbooks) Review

My Book of Pasting: Jigsaw Puzzles (Kumon Workbooks)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Son is only 2.5 yrs old, but loves puzzles and also likes to use the glue and paste. Since it was too much for me to keep on buying wooden puzzles, I got this book even though the age range was different. He is enjoying them immensely (though I have to do the cutting for him).
Cons:
Since the puzzle pieces and the pieces in the solution page come numbered, with the first puzzle, he simply started matching the numbers and got it right in a sec! Since then I have him solve the puzzle outside on the table and then make him stick the pieces on the solution page. I feel this could have been avoided.
One improvement would be to make it spiral bound so that you dont have to hold the pages while the kid is working!

Creative Thinking and Arts-Based Learning: Preschool Through Fourth Grade (5th Edition) Review

Creative Thinking and Arts-Based Learning: Preschool Through Fourth Grade (5th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Great text. Provided theoretical basis for understanding the role of the arts in developing cognitive skills. My students finally "got" the difference between crafty projects and arts based learning.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Creative Thinking and Arts-Based Learning: Preschool Through Fourth Grade (5th Edition)

"Why should educators be concerned about creative thought and artistic expression at a time when tough talk about academic standards, teacher accountability, and international ranking on tests dominates the educational scene?"

Creative Thinking and Arts Based Learning, Fifth Edition, argues that the ability to think in innovative and productive ways is a survival skill in a world where we are inundated daily with information. The authors' vision for this book is that it will equip practitioners in the fields of early childhood and elementary education to influence schools and communities to regard the creative processes and artistic products of children's minds with a new appreciation and respect.

In order to achieve this goal, the authors have grounded their content with the very latest theory and research on creative thought and play. They have provided case studies in every chapter where real teachers describe how they have integrated play and the arts into their curriculum. They have included opportunities for self-reflection in their Teachers Reflection feature and their Your Reflections feature. They have offered a collection of self-expressive activities and suggestions for teachers to use that are grounded in child-centered practice. Yet, while encouraging the incorporation of play and the arts, they have also acknowledged the importance of meeting the benchmark standards at the local, state, and national levels through the Meeting the Standards feature in every chapter and the Chapter by Chapter Cross Referenced Appendix of National Standards.

New To This Edition:

NEW! Provides research, tips, and specific suggestions for diverse learners--In the section on Curriculum Accommodations for Diverse Learners (Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8).

NEW! Shows how to integrate play and each of the art forms across the curriculum in the easy to read charts throughout the book–Charts are done by content area.

NEW! Connects the text to MyEducationLab–Features video clips and artifacts that illustrate the key points.

NEW! Includes a Chapter-by-Chapter Cross-Referenced Appendix of National Standards–Shows how and where the content of each chapter meets national standards in the arts, the content areas, and in early childhood teacher education.
