Simple Steps Review

This book explains the key areas of development as a child grows from infancy to two years old. Activities and games to aid in each area of development are presented for each age group. This book is helpful to parents when they run out of ideas for keeping their children busy and happy. Some of the activities, such as dancing with your child, seem obvious; however, a parent might overlook such activities. The book also presents ideas for stimulating development that had never occurred to me. Although the book makes mention of many of the toys you can purchase, it also explains how to make toys yourself and how to design activities for your child using materials commonly found in the home. Safety issues are thoroughly addressed.

Better Than Book Reports: More Than 40 Creative Responses to Literature Review

Better Than Book Reports: More Than 40 Creative Responses to Literature
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As the author of Better Than Book Reports, I am extremely gratified that BTBR has been in print since 1999. It's highly unusual for any professional book for teachers to be in print for over 10 years! This updated and revised edition has some special features that teachers like myself need in today's current educational landscape. First, a standards matrix helps teachers identify which activity ties into general state standards. Technology tips for each activity are included, and two sets of suggested books--one for students in grades 2-4 and one for grades 4-6 are listed. Additionally, more nonfiction books are included on the lists. Finally, a general grading rubric is included for easy assessment.
Most importantly, however, each of the activities remains a "comprehension demonstration." By this I mean that students, after teachers engage in a demonstration and guided practice of an activity, can choose a book to read on their own and then demonstrate their comprehension in ways that go beyond paper and pencil. These multimodal comprehension demonstrations include everything from creating a performance piece through drama, art, or music to demonstrating the scientific process or utilizing a geographical map or creating an historical time line. The activities in this book fulfill my mantra which is to "Seek, Nurture, and Excite the Reader inside Every Student!" Happy Reading to those who choose to utilize these engaging activities!

These engaging, hands-on activities help students demonstrate and build their comprehension, targeting key reading objectives—from summarizing information to recognizing different points-of-view. Activities include easy instructions, links to literature, and a student sample. A number of reproducible template pages are also included.
What's new in the revised and updated edition:
* Activities correlate to the language-arts standards
* Labels show which activities can be used with fiction, nonfiction, or other types of literature
* Grade-level book lists include favorite classics as well as new releases
* Additional book lists are provided for upper elementary readers
* Tech tips help teachers integrate technology in their activity goals For use with Grades 2–6.

I bought this book last year while working on a unit plan for my student teaching. I really needed some creative new ideas for teaching literature and I found some really awesome activities! Although this book is recommended for grades k-6, most of the activities are easily adaptable up to grade 8 or higher. I taught two of these lessons with eighth graders last year and they loved them! It is by far the best teacher resource book I own-- and I have many.
