Engaging for the child. Mostly math and language activities of differnt types, styles, and complexities. Tasks get progressively harder toward the new school year. A good general purpose review and prep to keep skills fresh and build a few new ones before schools starts in August. Moderately well-illustrated. Encourages independent reading and offers a suggested reading list--though parents should review any of these books for appropriateness for their child. Books off this list that increase vocabulary and reading skill without frustrating your child are also very appropriate. The key is for the child to enjoy reading challenging materials--let your child choose what interests them as much as possible.

Celebrate Christmas Around the World Review

Celebrate Christmas Around the World

I use this book every year in my Christmas Around the World unit. Overall it's a great resource. I like the variety of countries represented and the inclusion of crafts and recipes is great.
I do wish that the information was more suited for giving straight to students. It's not very Santa friendly. The book never outright states that Santa isn't real. But an alert child could infer it pretty well from the passages in this book.
Overall the recipes are great but some of them are a bit vague. Since these are going to be unfamiliar dishes to most of the cooks attempting them the directions should be pretty explicit.
All in all, even with it's weaknesses, I'd recommend this book.

Building a Strip Canoe: Plans for Eight Canoes, Plus Paddles and Cane Seats Review

Building a Strip Canoe: Plans for Eight Canoes, Plus Paddles and Cane Seats
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
About 12 years ago my dad and I built the wabnaki canoe using Mr Gilpatrick's book, and this year I built a Prospector design using Canoecraft, at least in part. I would like to add my opinion abut the relative merits of these books.
Gilpatrick's book is designed, in my opinion, to tell you how to build what used to be referred to in the wood/canvas days as "guide canoes". These were workhorse canoes, without unnecessary decorations, a plain paint job and no frills. Mr Gilpatrick uses his own designs in guiding parties down whitewater rivers in Maine. His book describes how to use 2 layers of fiberglass to strengthen the bottom for whitewater, has complete instructions for caning very comfortable seats, has a good pattern for a portage-comfortable yoke, and has complete plans for all his designs, which only need to be enlarged. He does NOT spend time discussing stems (which are pretty but not necessary and add a lot of work to the construction), scuppered gunwales, accent strips, patterned decks, etc. It is impossible to build a cedar strip canoe which is not pretty, but function takes precedence in this book. His designs are practical and functional and he has proven that his construction methods produce a tough, durable boat. I think a canoe can sometimes be too pretty. If you're afraid to get it scratched up a bit you're not going to be taking it in places you should.
Canoecraft goes into more detail about appearances and has a section on accent strips, shows finely crafted decks with coamings, and uses a construction utilizing stems. The canoe which is illustrated being constructed is the Redbird, and the canoe is absolutely beautiful. The book has very good trouble shooting sections in the chapters. The designs require either a knowledge of lofting or purchasing plans and there is not a lot of discussion on seat construction. A chapter on lofting and on caning seats would add immensely to this book. (Believe me, if you get used to caned seats you'll never have another kind). Also, the canoes are described as being built with a single layer of glass on the outside and inside. I know a fellow who banged such a canoe into a rock on the Madison river and his $3000 investment ended up needing major repair work. My double layered wabnaki has bounced off numerous rocks and ledges in the Big Blackfoot river and has its share of scratches but is structurally intact. I would definitely add a layer of glass if you do any whitewater stuff. You can certainly built a very beautiful canoe with the advice in this book, but I think the two books compliment one another and I used both in building the prospector.

If you know anyone who's a Red Sox fan, or a park-hopping baseball fan, or a new Boston-area resident, I can't think of a gift that's more practical and/or entertaining. Shea's charts ensure that you'll have a good view of the game; his materials on where to eat, where to stay, or where to park will help you make your visit that much more enjoyable. (And if you're new to the Nation, his explication of the Red Sox-Yankee rivalry will prove invaluable.)

Lessons from the Window Seat, Achieving Shared Vision in the Workplace Review

Lessons from the Window Seat, Achieving Shared Vision in the Workplace
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I would recommend this book to anyone that is in a leadership position or on a team. The book took me about five hours to read, but I will be using these ideas for a lifetime. Using the popular temperament theory (ref: Please Understand Me; D.Keirsey) along with the concept of shared vision, Mr. Specht has illuminated the need for incorporating each person's psychological needs into the group's mission, whether it be on a team or within the whole company. A special addition to the book is the last section called "Your Half of the Contract for Shared Vision Process" which is a self-exploratory "quick guide" to going through the process that the main character has described in the text. It helps you get a rough idea of what your temperament is and helps you build a short mission statement for yourself. I can see this book making an impact on employees throughout companies everywhere, so I recommend that you get a head start by reading it today.

Home Knits - Luxurious Handknits For Every Room Of The House Review

Home Knits - Luxurious Handknits For Every Room Of The House
Average Reviews:

I admit I'm not a fan of knitting odd objects just for the sake of knitting, but even so, I found this book surprisingly uninspiring. The colors range from white to beige, with a little cream and brown thrown in for variety, which some might find soothing but seemed just dull to me. As for the patterns, most knitters who are not total beginners don't need a pattern to do a square stockinette pillow or, for pete's sake, a coaster. The items that do need patterns are not things most people knit and for good reason - who needs to spend hours on lampshade covers, vase cozys, or shoe bags? Chair cushions, sure - except these had big buttons on them - so NOT comfortable. Last but not least, each and every pattern calls for the author's own brand of yarn. I'm not thinking that this book is going to sell much of it for her.

And the Fans Roared: The Sports Broadcasts That Kept Us on the Edge of Our Seats (Book + 2 Audio CDs)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Following up on the one-two punch they delivered in last year's bestselling And the Crowd Goes Wild, Garner and Costas stick to the winning formula: a coffee-table compilation of great moments in sports with a companion two-CD collection of original broadcasts of those events, starring Joe Montana, Mary Lou Retton, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and dozens of other champs.
There are a few muffs -- why use an audio clip from 1956 to illustrate Jackie Robinson's historic 1947 debut with the Dodgers? But there's much more to celebrate, such as Lyell Bremser's call of Johnny Rodgers's 72-yard punt return in Nebraska's 1971 victory over rival Oklahoma: "Holy moly! Man, woman and child, did that put 'em in the aisle!"
A true sports paradise. A great gift combo of book and CD audio delights.

I purchased this book hoping to find out a few tricks beyond the simple "strip" style pop up. I was very pleasantly surprised to find instructions for turning circles, 3-D cages, and sliders, among others! Given the number of projects included in the book, I feel it's an exceptional value! Instructions and diagrams were clear and easy for me to follow and I look forward to sharing some of these projects at my local elementary school, where I volunteer as art director for a 5/6th grade combination class. This book is warped, hysterical and fresh. The man is a credit to the humor genre.

Are you cheap? Are you unskilled? Are you mediocre? Bob Holt is.In Views From the Cheap Seats: Lifestyles of the Unskilled and Mediocre, he relates his views on the concerns of middle class workers who are forced to live on a budget, and opinions which many people may be unable to express. Many of you may be in agreement with Bob, unless your company offers a health plan with sufficient coverage for sedation.Bob is currently living in his leftover underground Y2K bunker in Mantua, New Jersey. When he decides to emerge from his headquarters, he is constantly faced with true-to-life adventures like traveling eleven miles back and forth to work and causing a gas crisis, driving from Neptune to New Egypt while remaining in New Jersey, and training for the Olympics while overcoming obstacles such as caffeine addiction and a lack of talent.Bob also reflects on the true meaning of Christmas (for 45 seconds before the mall opens), discusses the virtues of better living through Powerball, and relates the finer points of Southern New Jersey, which do not include E-Z Pass. But they do include a hermit crab beauty pageant.

Along with poignant and humorous descriptions, spontaneous dialogue provides a continuous momentum to this series of slice-of-life sketches. As the children grow beyond their home and neighborhood, the author moves from being on top of it all to wondering what will happen next.
Cool Mom on the Hot Seat shows what one family found that worked: time alone together at home where one-on-one chats in the kitchen are daily events, and time in the outdoors around a campfire, far away from the phone and computer.
