(More customer reviews)Those of us who marvelled at Philip M. Parker's hypnotic blockbuster, "The 2007-2012 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China" The 2007-2012 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China can now finally rejoice! The World Edition has just been released. Epic in scale, this report leaves absolutely nothing more to be said on this so very basic and fundamental subject.
Like it's predecessors, the micro analyses of Greater China, Japan, India and The United States, this extraordinary macro analysis is panoramic in scale and of far reaching magnitude, but so much more so!
However, unlike some of its predecessors, it is only available to the reader in one highly desirable format: paperback, ($795.00, 187 pages, 9" X 7" X 0.4", in stock and available with one click and pay phrase ordering, not presently available in Kindle format, gift wrapping available).
Mr. Parker and the wacky guys at Icon Group (who have made the phrase "latent demand" a world wide sensation) have cleverly been able to expand this analysis to a world view in only 46 additional pages while charging an additional $300. A 25% increase in content for a 38% increase in price! This is certainly capitalism at its finest and shows how very knowledgeable and discerning a social scientist Mr. Parker is!
Undoubtedly a classic in the making, this analysis is beloved by children as well as adults, scholars as well as arm chair travelers, and anyone who has suffered from Montezuma's Revenge while traveling outside the US or just even after eating strange looking leftovers while standing at the fridge because you were bored and couldn't help yourself. Gosh, isn't it so much better with a toilet seat? "Yes!" "Certainly!" And there you have it.
This should not be considered just a book about world-wide diarrhea and those who suffer from it. In fact, like many great writings, "The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats" should be appreciated on multiple levels....cultural, political, historic, dramatic, poetic, educational, satiric, humorous and even as a damn good beach read.
As with the Greater China report, The World Report, fundamentally strategic in nature, starts with the eternal premise that "The concept of latent demand is rather subtle". This hypnotic story line evolves outward, captivating and fascinating the reader. Soon an overlay of the Eastern philosophical tenet "The average propensity to consume is constant" is introduced and as you can well imagine, all hell breaks loose! At this point I could not put the book down.....I remained on the pot for almost three full days.....until I had read all 187 pages.
To quote from my earlier review, because, well, why not, nothing much has changed here: "In the end, despite coming to the ultimate and often life altering knowledge that "Product and service offerings, and the actual identity of the players involved, while important for certain issues, are relatively unimportant for estimates of latent demand", and "....in the long run, households with no income eventually have no consumption", the reader comes to fundamentally understand that the true nature, the very essence of, humankind, will whatever the circumstance, choose a toilet seat over a hole in the ground nine times out of ten." Amen to that and pass the TP!
Sadly, not releasing this work in download-able PDF format prevents users from printing it out on a continuous roll of toilet paper, thereby offsetting some of the original expense. The toilet paper format is "pay as you go" and quite affordable. My solution was to scan all 187 pages on to my computer and then go the toilet paper route. A bit more time consuming but with the economy such as it is, a good trade off.
Many devoted readers, however, find that the small format paperback version to be extremely useful while traveling and beg for the entire series to finally be released in Kindle format. Not sure what the holdup here is.
And, if all this is not enough, there are rumours that this is soon to be a major motion picture! Who would you cast in the leading roles? My vote goes to Meryl Streep as the sexy statistician, Daniel Day Lewis as the ardent social scientist and Jackie Chan as the humble but noble toilet seat carver.

This study covers the world outlook for wood toilet seats across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
