My class enjoyed the activities in the book. Some students identified the pattern without completing the math problems, but most did the calculations first. Make sure that each student has and uses a ruler and pencil. A few tried freehand, but the wiggles made the designs a mess.

Creating the Not So Big House: Insights and Ideas for the New American Home Review

Creating the Not So Big House: Insights and Ideas for the New American Home
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's rare that a sequel is better than the original. This was one of them. Where The Not So Big House was pretty and pretty much content-free, this book provided real floorplans, and real houses, which I feel helped to communicate Susanka's ideas more clearly.
I also found this book far less irritating than the first, and therefore more useful, in no small part because some of her hard -- and alienating -- positions have been considerably softened. No longer does she claim that dining rooms are obsolete because "nobody uses them" (I do). She seems much more willing to accept that there are lots of different lifestyles out there, and a house should be built to work with the lifestyle of its owners.
If you are in the planning phases for a new house, or are just looking for ideas on how to make your current house more liveable, this is an excellent resource. In fact, I would suggest that you skip the first book altogether.

As an upholstery student, I am always looking for new resources. Had checked this book out of library and took it to class to show my teacher. She has been doing upholstery for over 40 years and she was impressed with the book. There were some techniques that were new to her. I ordered two books, one for me and a copy for my teacher. She now recommends this book to her students.

Starting with the dedication "We are all related," this book goes on to unite each one of us, no matter what heritage we hold close to the heart. A craft from each culture is represented with step-by-step directions and a picture of the finished product.
Countries from all over the world are represented here: North America (United States, Mexico, Canada), Central America (Guatemala, Panama), Caribbean (Haiti, Puerto Rico), South America (Peru, Ecuador, Brazil), Africa (Morocco, W. Africa, Ghana), Asia (Turkey, Java, Bali, India, Japan, China, Cambodia), and Europe (England, Italy, Poland, Russia, Greece), Australia (New South Wales and the Northern Territory), and Greenland (North Inspectorate).
Great way to introduce other countries and cultures to children as young as 5 years old. Great teaching tool to have as a resource for craft needs.

History Speaks : Legislative Branch of the Government Review

History Speaks : Legislative Branch of the Government
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I homeschool and used this with our 4th and 7th grade children. It was so easy to understand. The book has 46 pgs. and begins with what the Legislative Branch is about. It lists the Articles concerning the House of Rep. on one side of the page; with the meaning of what you just read right beside it. It does the same thing with the Senate. After each section is completed there is an activity to reinforce learning (Fill in the blank, True or False, etc).
A few things covered are: Methods of passing laws, How to write a bill, Write your own bill, Powers of Congress, Stretching the powers of Congress, Powers forbidden to the Federal Govt. and to the states, Checks and balances, separation of powers, Officers of the House and Senate, Congressional committees, PAC, Lobbies, Senator's schedule and Legislative terms.
This book has helped me to better understand how my government works and to appreciate our forefathers foresight in making the three branches work together, while keeping them separate.
The other night when we said it was time for bed, the kids said their committee had presented a bill before the House of Representatives about staying up one hour later to read. They said it had passed the House and was now before the Senate. I, representing the Senate, passed the bill and it was sent to the president (dad) to sign; which he did after much begging for him not to veto the bill. The bill passed~ha!
I highly recommend this set of books. We will start on the Executive Branch Monday (can't wait).

Twin Sense: A Sanity-Saving Guide to Raising Twins -- From Pregnancy Through the First Year Review

Twin Sense: A Sanity-Saving Guide to Raising Twins -- From Pregnancy Through the First Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good book for somebody who already has already done some research, taken classes, or has familiarity with raising kids. It is well-organized and provides a quick reference. However, it was not a good fit for me. I do not have older kids, and this is the first book I read on the subject. Too many of the terms the author used were unfamiliar, and the book does not provide a good explanation for them. What is a boppy? How exactly do you swaddle a baby? I found it frustrating to have to read the book practically at my computer, so that I can google all unfamiliar terms. A few pictures or explanations would have gone a long way. I was also annoyed by the constant reminders (practically every other page) to take prenatal classes to really learn the subject in each chapter. I thought the book was supposed to provide the necessary information. I next read the book "Juggling Twins" by Meghan Regan-Loomis. I found it a lot more informative for somebody who is just starting and trying to learn the basics not only when it comes to twins, but to babies in general. In short, in my opinion, if you want a quick reference on important points when raising twins, "Twin Sense" is a good book. If you need more detail, you may want to read something else first, or do some online research on your own.

Head First Rails: A Learner's Companion to Ruby on Rails Review

Head First Rails: A Learner's Companion to Ruby on Rails
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over the last year, I have picked up a few books on Ruby on Rails but the information exits me as soon as it enters. Creating a Rails book in the Head First style is what I needed personally. This is a beginners book, but when a book is subtitled "A learner's Companion", one shouldn't expect anything advanced. For those who are looking for an advanced book, then they should check out The Rails Way by Obie Fernandez.
Ruby on Rails is an interesting and controversial framework, and is often difficult to get beginners help for. There are quite a few elitists who frown on designers and newbies like us trying to learn a framework, so we can make our designs more interactive. But you know what...Tough. There are countless cases where an engineer falls short at the CSS/DOM level and the designer has to take over. This leads to designers having to learn a bit of engineering....
The best thing to do is start at the beginning and practice a lot. Head First Rails covers a lot of projects (interesting) instead of just one (an easy way to lose interest).
In a nutshell, Head First books are designed for a certain type of person. Some don't understand, and complain about them..."theres a lot of pictures", etc... but they miss the point of the books. They're for beginners who want to learn fast and want to retain. They're designed as an educational experience and not a reference. For reference, there's plenty of books by O'reilly and Addison Wesely and others to cover that.
One reviewer here claims that this book teaches old conventions, i.e. the doesn't teach the RESTful method. This is not true. There is an entire chapter devoted to REST, and the project is mashing up a Google map. REST is a trendy term, and can be learned in an hour. As a matter of fact, it took about an hour to do the Google/Ajax map mashup in Head First Rails... sure beats the typical digg/fake bookstore projects in the other Rails books.
Head First Rails has been a joy to read. Its one of those rare books that I carry around with me. If you want to learn rails not just in the modern style but also historically (and thats a big deal, there's tons of Rails 1.x sites out there that need updating), this is the one to start with. After this book, i recommend learning Ruby itself, either in "Learn to Program" by Chris Pine (for beginners) or "Programming Ruby" by Dave Thomas and Andy Hunt. After that, I reccomend "The Rails Way" as a reference by Obie Fernandez if you plan on staying in Rails. The Rails Way has everything one needs to know, but is definitely not for beginners. Start here.

Sally Swift proved to be an excellent teacher in her last book, and she maintains the title throughout the second edition. I find the illustrations and analogies to be excellent for my own use as well as teaching others. So many concepts are broken down and compared to every day events and mechanical workings that they are almost impossible to forget. Sally helps you understand the mechanincs of your own body as well as your horse's and helps us understand why our instructors tell us to do the things they do.

I own a trim shop myself and do alot of custom interiors. I'm always searching for new ideas and techniques. This book has a world of knowledge for the beginner. I picked up some info myself and I've been doing this for many years. The supplier list in itself is very helpful. This is the best book on custom trim I've seen to date. There are a few vague places but it would be impossible to include every tiny detail. The book does make it sound easier than it actually is, but there is no substitute for experience. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in custom trim work. I wish it had been available when I started.

Dora's Potty Book (Dora the Explorer)
Average Reviews:

My toddler is a huge Dora fan, and she will like this book because it is a Dora product, but beyond that, it really isn't that great. The story line is unimaginative (once Dora was a baby and wore diapers, now she is a big girl and uses the potty) and it does not keep my daughter's attention all the way through. Too wordy! Also, the button to make the flushing sound is too difficult for her to push on her own.

EYEWITNESS WORKBOOKS: Ancient Rome (DK Eyewitness Books) Review

EYEWITNESS WORKBOOKS: Ancient Rome (DK Eyewitness Books)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Ancient Rome" is the second DK Revealed book that I have seen and my original comment that the see-through pages add very little to what is a solid book without them still applies. In this book there are eight see-through pages that reveal Roman soldiers storming a fort, gladiators locked in combat, Pompeii buried under the ash of a volcano, and a magnificent Roman villa. They provide some basic cut-away views, which are okay, but given what DK has normally provided in their richly illustrated books I was really expecting something spectacular. Indeed, even without the see-through pages "Ancient Rome" is a wonderful look at the glory that was Rome.
This volume is written by Peter Chrisp, author of over 50 children's history books, in consultation with Dr. Hugh Bowden, lecturer in Ancient History at King's College London. It traces the story of Rome from city to republic to empire, looking at legionaries on the march, the emphasis on bread and circuses, and the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum that have revealed so much about the life and leisure of the Romans. The illustrations include not only photographs of ancient ruins and artifacts, but also modern recreations and shots from movies like "Cleopatra" and "Ben Hur." Young readers will not get a detailed history of ancient Rome, but they will find lots of interesting details, which is why this is more of a supplemental volume to the study of Rome than a primary source.
As always pay attention to the captions for the wonderful illustrations because that is where a lot of these details pop up. The archeological perspective is especially interesting this time around, showing how some of these ancient wonders are uncovered. Other volumes in the DK Revealed series are devoted to "Ancient Egypt" and the "Human Body," and they may well be able to succeed on the additional level of those see-through pages.
