I really like these Motorbook workshop series. These guys are taking automobile how-to books to a new level. This one is really good and ranks up there with those written by Don Taylor on upholstery/interior subject matter. I found this and his books make a strong basis for doing upholstery for the do-it yourselfer. I needed these books for my airplane, but the process is pretty much the same for an auto and these are really the only things out there.
This book is really good and I belive it is a complement and fills in the blanks where Taylors books left off. For example I found Taylors books great on Armrests, Panels and sewing tips, but then this book is great on seats and especially foam work. Taylors explains panels really well, but this goes onto discuss painting them too, if thats what your into.
You can't go wrong buying all these books as a set and at $40-50 for all of em, thats small peas compared to the price of taking a chance on the 3-7 video series that exisit out there on trying to explain what these books do.
If your working on a homebuilt or ceritfified GA aircraft these are really your only choices, do not think even the EAA has courses on this subject, althouhg your homebuilt manufacturer may have something.
What I would really have liked to have seen is a 1-2 page discussion of foam and ergonomics in car seating. Using tradition poly foam vrs some of the more exotic confor or memory foam would be nice.

Auto Upholstery & Interiors (HPBOOKS 1265) Review

Auto Upholstery and Interiors (HPBOOKS 1265)

This book covers too many topics and does not provide adequate detail on any specific area of auto interiors. For example, the book states that seat foam should be replaced with the proper density foam, but does give any information on density specifications or typical foam types and densities used in auto seats. The book also devotes considerable space to subjects such as: painting, rust treatment, polishing and cleaning. These subjects are too general to be included in a book specific to upholstery and interiors. Many of the photographs are "before and after" pictures which do not aid in explaining methods or techniques. Not recommended for the do-it-yourselfer looking for complete step by step procedures. The book contains only 136 numbered pages.

Recently, I came across this fantastic book and quickly discovered it was so much more than just beautiful pictures and great ideas for customizing the interior of any automobile.
As I flipped through the glossy pages, I was immediately inspired and began coming up with great ways to use this information in all aspects of my decorating. We choose one of our room paint colors based on an interior we both liked in here and even took some of the upholstery ideas for recovering furniture in our office.
There is so much great stuff in here and best of all it's timeless. Everyone should have a copy of this book in their home. This is truly a book you'll want to have forever and it looks great on your coffee table too boot!

Custom Auto Interiors Review

I own a trim shop myself and do alot of custom interiors. I'm always searching for new ideas and techniques. This book has a world of knowledge for the beginner. I picked up some info myself and I've been doing this for many years. The supplier list in itself is very helpful. This is the best book on custom trim I've seen to date. There are a few vague places but it would be impossible to include every tiny detail. The book does make it sound easier than it actually is, but there is no substitute for experience. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in custom trim work. I wish it had been available when I started.

Automotive Upholstery Handbook Review

Automotive Upholstery Handbook
Average Reviews:

This inexpensive handbook introduces many key methods for making and installing automotive upholstery. The focus of this text is on restoration (stock replacement) projects and covers everything from carpeting and seat covers, to headliners, door panels and convertible tops. Basic projects for trucks, vans and boats are also included.
This is probably the best introduction to auto upholstery sewing techniques that I've come across. This text is packed full of photographs and the steps outlined very clearly to take you from beginning to end of an upholstery restoration project as smoothly as possible.
A few minor criticisms on this text: all photographs in this text are black & white, and some of them are not as clear as they could be; pattern making is relatively bushed over (in favor of working on the actual fabric to be used); and a few very commonly used techniques are left out (although you will find them in Taylor's "Custom Auto Interiors" book).
All in all, this is an excellent introduction to auto upholstery techniques, a great time and money saver, and will get you off to a very good start. This book will tell you everything you need to know to restore your car's interior, making it look brand new.
If you are interested in creating custom upholstery and interiors, however, you'll need another book, as this text does not cover custom auto trim work. "Custom Auto Interiors" by Don Taylor and Ron "The Stitcher" Mangus beautifully covers custom auto upholstery/fabrication techniques, and together with the Automotive Upholstery Handbook, will provide you everything you need to know to create an incredible custom interior for your next custom project.
