I loved this book. I read it when I was working as a nanny. It inspired me. The author believes that it is the primary role of a caregiver to stimulate the child's creativity. The book tells you how to do this. The chapters are arranged by age, starting from infancy. She gives advice about encouraging creative behavior through movement, music, art, language, etc. The baby I was taking care of at the time also loved the activities. Believe me, this book is worth the money.

I have only just begun to teach children from the age of 6 and up, so I am always looking for useful information and, more importantly, step-by-step instructions for them to follow. While this book isn't a step-by-step book, it does give a good overview of projects in a variety of mediums and that is certainly a great resource for me. It is a book that I will pull off the shelf time and again to refresh my classes as it has plenty of suggestions that inspire multiple projects.

This is a good book for someone who has never taught before but it wasn't all that helpful to me as I primarily substitute for middle school. This book is for elementary age substitute teaching only.

By Cary Seeman DeHan and Shannon Hofstrand Rasmussen. Lesson plans for nearly every subject area and every elementary grade (including ESL/ELL) give substitute teachers an arsenal of standards-based activities to use when an absent teacher leaves no instructions. Fifty surefire lessons (some with reproducible handouts) comprise the main part of the book. A preliminary section lays out the dos and don'ts of subbing, suggests how to equip a personal "sub kit," and provides ideas and forms for classroom management, while a final chapter offers time-fillers for navigating those awkward few minutes between the end of the lesson and the ringing of the bell. Grades K–6. Illustrated. 8½" x 11". Good Year Books. 108 pages. Second Edition. ©2007. GDY427.

I purchased this book for a class I am taking and now plan on keeping the book for future references. It has a lot of useful information and many websites listed in it to help plan lesson plans from preschool through elementary. I will use it in the future just as a refreshner on classroom organization and to help re-develop yearly lesson plans.

Creative Activities for Young Children is a rare combination of an art and curriculum text that has gotten better with every edition. Teachers, parents and child care providers will value this teaching resource that not only promotes creativity in children but also encourages readers to exercise their own creativity. This text provides a sound theoretical base for the hundreds of practical activities in the arts and across the curriculum. This updated edition addresses the No Child Left Behind law, teacher certification standards, differentiated instructions and learning styles as they relate to early childhood education. It also places a greater emphasis on adapting materials and activities to children with special needs and on more activities to meet specific learning styles. New sections entitled "This One's for You!" and "Think About It" provide fun and thought-provoking information on research and related topics, making each chapter informative and enjoyable for the reader.

Elizabeth I, the People's Queen: Her Life and Times, 21 Activities (For Kids series) Review

Elizabeth I, the People's Queen: Her Life and Times, 21 Activities (For Kids series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Elizabeth I, The People's Queen, is a well-documented biography of one of the most famous figures in English history. The world of Elizabeth was frought with turmoil. It was a time of bitter fighting between Protestants and Catholics. Elizabeth was always on the watch for traitors and those who wished to end her life.
Author Kerrie Logan Hollihan, does a wonderful job in not only presenting the facts, but also giving readers a real sense of what it was like to live in those times. As expected, there is a lot of information about Elizabeth. There is also information about other historical figures such as William Shakespeare, Mary, Queen of Scots, Henry VIII, Frances Drake, and Walter Raleigh. Ms. Hollihan is very thorough in providing the full picture of England during the Elizabethan period.
Other interesting features in the book include the 21 activities that kids can try at home. My personal favorites are growing a knot garden and stitching a blackwork flower. The book has numerous photographs which give an excellent visual picture of the people and events of the time.
Elizabeth I, the People's Queen, is an excellent resource for teachers and students who wish to learn about the life and times of Queen Elizabeth I. I highly recommend it.

Queen Elizabeth I learned to trust no one. Even before Elizabeth was crowned queen at the age of 25, her mother, Anne Boleyn, had been executed for treason by her father, King Henry VIII. She was then removed from the royal line of succession and later imprisoned in the Tower of London, accused of plotting to overthrow her sister, Queen Mary. Yet despite all the challenges to her power, she became a hero of the Church of England in a century when Catholics and Protestants burned one another at the stake, she spoke five languages in a day when few women were taught to read, and she led a nation where men proclaimed that women had no right to take part in public life. During Elizabeth's 45-year reign, English literature, theater, music, and culture flourished. And, after her navy defeated the Spanish armada, England's military power made the once tiny kingdom into a chief player among Europe's nations. This lively biography of one of England's greatest monarchs includes a time line, online resources, and 21 activities to offer readers hands-on experiences with life in the Elizabethan Era. Kids can create costumes for the queen's court, including a knight's helmet, a neck ruff, and a cloak, play and sing a madrigal, create a 3-D map of an Elizabethan town, stitch a blackwork flower, design a family coat of arms, play a game of Nine Men's Morris, grow a knot garden, and much more.

Automotive Upholstery Handbook Review

Automotive Upholstery Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

This inexpensive handbook introduces many key methods for making and installing automotive upholstery. The focus of this text is on restoration (stock replacement) projects and covers everything from carpeting and seat covers, to headliners, door panels and convertible tops. Basic projects for trucks, vans and boats are also included.
This is probably the best introduction to auto upholstery sewing techniques that I've come across. This text is packed full of photographs and the steps outlined very clearly to take you from beginning to end of an upholstery restoration project as smoothly as possible.
A few minor criticisms on this text: all photographs in this text are black & white, and some of them are not as clear as they could be; pattern making is relatively bushed over (in favor of working on the actual fabric to be used); and a few very commonly used techniques are left out (although you will find them in Taylor's "Custom Auto Interiors" book).
All in all, this is an excellent introduction to auto upholstery techniques, a great time and money saver, and will get you off to a very good start. This book will tell you everything you need to know to restore your car's interior, making it look brand new.
If you are interested in creating custom upholstery and interiors, however, you'll need another book, as this text does not cover custom auto trim work. "Custom Auto Interiors" by Don Taylor and Ron "The Stitcher" Mangus beautifully covers custom auto upholstery/fabrication techniques, and together with the Automotive Upholstery Handbook, will provide you everything you need to know to create an incredible custom interior for your next custom project.

In this revised edition, learn to make and install complete interiors in your car, truck or van. The author teaches you how to sew like an expert, and avoid costly mistakes. Learn to recover and build bench bucket seats, make headliners and carpets, plus how to build boat seats from scratch. Materials are described with specific recommendations for vinyl, cloth, velvet, leather, Nimbus, panel board, etc. Indispensable for anyone interested in upholstery.

The Amazing Dad: More than 400 Ways to Wow the Kids Review

The Amazing Dad: More than 400 Ways to Wow the Kids
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These days fathers need all the help they can get. My eight-year-old daughter used to think I was the coolest guy in the universe, but lately I've been getting hip-checked by the backstreet boys and n'sync. I've found myself competing for her attention; and I've been trying for the past few months to pull any fun rabbit out of the hat I can find (I got one of those "juggling for klutzes" kits and practiced in secret). A few weeks ago, a buddy of mine (also a dad- and familiar with my plight) told me he'd come across a really cool book called The Amazing Dad. I pounded the pavement till I found the lone remaining copy at a local bookstore; and I was blown away- on darn near every page there's a cool trick or fun activity that any spaz can do. Every one I've tried so far has left my children laughing, squealing, and begging for more. The diagramming makes everything an easy-to-duplicate, no-brainer. This book has become my "FUN BIBLE"- I keep it hidden so as not to reveal the source of my new-found coolness. Each time the kids ask me "Where'd you learn that?", I just give them a shrug and play it off like "Oh, I've got a million of 'em- you ain't seen nothin yet"- which means they better come out with volume two before I run out of rabbits. Seriously- a dynamite book.... big thanks to Preuss and Livera for making me a cool dad again. Maybe they can teach me to sing and dance.....

Baby Days: Activities, Ideas, and Games for Enjoying Daily Life with a Child Under Three Review

Baby Days: Activities, Ideas, and Games for Enjoying Daily Life with a Child Under Three
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Baby Days is a record of the author's life with her daughter Anna during their first three years together. Barbara Rowley has made a career out of devising great ways to have fun with kids. The terrific thing about this book is that it's organized by type of activity and age. What harried parent hasn't thought, "oh sure, finger painting is wonderful, but what I really need is something to keep her busy while I'm cooking dinner." That's where Baby Days comes in. There are chapters for leisurely morning activities, meal and naptime ideas, and even sections on what to do in the car or on the plane. Each chapter's activities are also grouped by age, so it's easy to find something that will work for you and your child. Add to that the "prep time" and "messiness quotient" listings and you've got a recipe for success! Best of all, many of the activities only require a little energy and imagination or items usually found around the house. There's truly something here for everyone. This book inspired me to set up a reading nook (it's SO much more fun to read in a tent while lounging on pillows!) create a special hideaway and an activity box and put together a craft cupboard, among many other things, big and small. If those long days at home have got you down, it's time to get out of the baby daze and get this book!

Toddler Time: 150 Easy Ways to Keep Them Busy, Safe & Happy Review

Toddler Time: 150 Easy Ways to Keep Them Busy, Safe and Happy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book does not live up to its description! I was expecting a book that would give me fresh ideas for activities my toddler could do with some degree of independence. That is NOT what I got.
Most of the ideas were not very original ("Have your toddler hit the pavement with some sidewalk chalk"), and most of them are more appropriate for older children ("Have your toddler make dolls from panty hose.") A few ideas have serious safey concerns ("Let your toddler play with your hair accessories" and "Let your toddler play with packing popcorn"). Other ideas are not at all independent ("Have your toddler help make homemade pizza"). Many ideas assume your child can independently cut with scissors. Some other favorites: "Get help watching your toddler from a friend" and "Hand your toddler off to your spouse."
Also, fair warning to those who are not Christian: More than a few of the ideas are about Christmas and Easter. As a Christian, this didn't bother me, but I have several friends of other faiths who would probably not choose this book.

Do-It-Yourself Family: Fun and Useful Home Projects the Whole Family Can Make Together Review

Do-It-Yourself Family: Fun and Useful Home Projects the Whole Family Can Make Together
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family wants to learn to do things. We just got a set of tools and we borrowed this book to get started. It is the perfect book for a family who doesn't know where to start, who wants to spend time together and build something.
The book offers projects organized by room.
The first section is about materials and tools, motivating family members and safety tips. Eric Stromer made me want to get a nailgun!
The projects are mostly woodwork and help you create many helpful shelving systems and containers for storage. There are also very neat ideas to get your children to LOVE their rooms and keep them decluttered.
Every project is very well described, explained step by step and there is plenty of room for your own adaptations and variations on the theme. It is really easy to follow. There is no time set as it's written to be done with kids, so a project could take several days or weeks if life gets busy.
Eric Stromer also offers short projects, called "under threes" to get something done under 3 h and within a tighter budget. It's a cool alternative to remotivate your team.
I would personnaly start with the last project in the book: the workbench. Then we want to do the big-kid headboard with the rope light and storage.
This book is a gem. I am not a big fan of tv people writting books just because, but this one is smart and inspiring. With a little imagination you can do almost anything. After a few projects you'll know to make all the basics, that you can combine according to your needs. We plan on getting this book. And a nail gun.

Reaching Standards and Beyond in Kindergarten: Nurturing Children's Sense of Wonder and Joy in Learning Review

Reaching Standards and Beyond in Kindergarten: Nurturing Children's Sense of Wonder and Joy in Learning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jacobs and Crowley's book begins with a Chapter One title that contains an extremely accurate phrase, "getting off to a good start." With many Kindergarten classrooms across the country being operated like first grade boot camps, the authors remind early childhood professionals that Kindergarten is still the first taste of formal schooling that a significant number children still expreience (depending on the state) if they did not attend pre-Kindergarten (like me)(Barnett, Epstein, Friedman, Boyd, & Hustedt, 2008). For the rest of the book, they successfully walk a fine line between staying true to developmentally appropriate practice and keeping a firm eye on accountability expectations in this catalyzed, standard-based education system that exists today since the passing and implementation of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) education legislation.
After an excellent Chapter One, the book predictably moves from more appropriately designing the Kindergarten classroom to desiging effective instruction for each of the subject areas. Each, though, chapter offers succinct but surgical applications on how to interpret state curriculum standards and make them relevant to the everyday classroom. For example, mathematics is put within a framework of motivation rather than straight skill acquisition. Discovering how mathematical concepts make logical sense is exhorted as the perspective that state curriculum standards shade for early childhood children. Each of the other chapters imbued by their titles takes a similarly constructivist interpretation.
I recommend this book to any early childhood teacher, but I would use it in conjuction with Dominic Guido's K-TODAY: TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE KINDERGARTEN YEAR and Bobbi Fisher's JOYFUL LEARNING IN KINDERGARTEN to keep the balance a little more ethically grounded in child development point-of-view rather than an information processing one.
