Love You More: A Novel Review

Love You More: A Novel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In Lisa Gardner's "Love You More," Tessa Leoni has a great deal on her plate. She has been a Massachusetts state trooper for four years and has a beautiful six-year-old daughter, Sophie, whose father's name Tessa does not even know. Leoni has an inner toughness that she will desperately need as she faces an uncertain future. Her husband of three years and Sophie's stepfather, Brian Darby, has been shot to death, and the evidence points to Tessa as the perpetrator. Worse, Tessa's little girl, Sophie, has disappeared. The detectives soon suspect that not only did Tessa gun down her husband in cold blood, but that she also killed and buried her daughter.
Handling the case is Sergeant Detective D. D. Warren, a forty-year old, ten-year veteran of the Boston Police Department. Assisting is Bobby Dodge, her former lover, who is a Massachusetts State Police Detective. D. D. is married to her job; she is sharp, aggressive, and ambitious, qualities that she shares with Tessa. Nevertheless, she has contempt for Leoni, whom she considers to be a conniving and selfish monster. D. D. is determined to nail this pretty and petite woman and put her away for a very long time. On the home front, D. D. has been dating Alex, a teacher at the police academy, for over six months. She is not sure if she has the temperament to make their relationship last.
D. D. and Bobby work the Leoni case, and it is a thankless task from the get-go. The forensic evidence is muddled, and Leoni, who is less than cooperative, has a battered and swollen face. Apparently, someone has beaten Tessa to a pulp. Will she claim that she shot Brian in self-defense because he was an abusive spouse? The situation becomes steadily more complicated and ambiguous, and D. D. is furious when she suspects that Tessa has been lying to them from the beginning.
Lisa Gardner, whose fans are legion, is the undisputed queens of the domestic thriller. The reasons for her popularity include: tough heroines who are even more macho than their male counterparts; byzantine plots in which the truth is carefully veiled; gripping scenes of suspense and violence; and conclusions that always include an extra, unforeseen twist. Although "Love You More" contains all of these elements, Gardner may have overreached this time. Tessa Leoni is a character we can and do root for. However, the author would have us believe that this woman is a master of weaponry, strategy, and hand-to-hand combat, and is so self-possessed that she can think clearly while navigating the most arduous and hazardous obstacles. When it comes to her personal life, on the other hand, she is woefully naïve.
Still, this is a page-turner that will appeal to aficionados of escapist fiction. Readers will realize fairly quickly that Brian's death is anything but a straightforward homicide, and it is fun to follow the clues along with the high-strung D. D. Warren. There is plenty of action to keep us engrossed; the roller-coaster ride never slows down until the final pages. Even though "Love You More" is a bit over-the-top, Gardner is a skilled enough writer to keep us engaged. She includes fascinating details about prisons, police procedure, and the challenges faced every day by overworked and harried homicide detectives. Gardner leaves us entertained and eager to follow the further adventures of the intrepid D. D. Warren.

Eject: The Complete History of U.S. Aircraft Escape Systems Review

Eject: The Complete History of U.S. Aircraft Escape Systems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Page 15 shows a photo of some Naval Aviators toting seat-pack parachutes. The author mysteriously states that these are somehow attached to their shoulders, and that when released, it "would allow the parachute to drop down on its harness and become their seat cushion." This, of course, is pure fantasy. Holding the parachute by its leg straps across one's shoulder was just a handy way to carry a seat-pack parachute prior to putting it on. The author's erroneous explanation is typical of many inaccuracies throughout the book. Another is his constant inaccurate reference to the "U.S. Army Air Corps" during World War Two. The Army Air Corps (AAC) ceased to exist in June of 1941, some six months before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and our subsequent entry into World War Two. The Army Air Corps (AAC) was supplanted by the Army Air Forces (AAF) and the Army Air Forces (AAF) was the branch of service in which military personnel served during the entire war. There was no longer any "Army Air Corps." The author even has the original P-80 as a plane used by "The U.S. Army Air Corps." This, too, is a typical erroneous figment of his imagination.
The book does present accurate information here and there. But, with so many inaccuracies also included, it's difficult to discern one from the other.
Carl B. Jordan

I really like this book. I borrowed it from my sister-in-law first and wanted to copy so many pages, it just made more sense to buy the book. I have made some of the play dough and have just bought the ingredients to make some sparkle glue. The only thing is I'm not sure what to put the glue in when it's done.

This is the second book with alternatives to worksheets and again, it contains great ideas to have kids learn through easy and engaging hands-on activities. All the ideas provided are organized in alphabetical order, and for each activity you will find suggestions on how to apply it through different areas across the curriculum. Some of the ideas included are how to make and use: board games, round dioramas (an alternative to the wonderful triaramas and quadriramas introduced in the first book), flip-flop books, menus, passports, puppets, time lines, spinners, mobiles and many more. Some ideas require basic materials like construction paper, envelopes, boxes, paper plates, and other household items. If the activity requires a specific template, the book contains a section of patterns that can be photocopied (like for example the pattern to make eyeglasses, flip-flop books, spinners, pinwheels and much more). Most of the activities require no further preparation and most can be done with the every day resources that most teachers keep in their classrooms.
If you have tried the first book, you can't miss this one which is just as good. If you haven't tried any, you won't want to miss them! Both books will help you give a twist to your lessons and you will definitely use fewer worksheets and obtain better results!

FamilyFun Boredom Busters: 365 Games, Crafts & Activities For Every Day of the Year Review

FamilyFun Boredom Busters: 365 Games, Crafts and Activities For Every Day of the Year
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a fantastic resource for those days when you are struggling to think of new ways to have fun with the kids. I liked the variety, for example some projects did not require a lot of advance preparation and can be done in under thirty minutes, while others look quite involved. And it's not all just a bunch of arts and crafts --this book includes tons of games and activities for everything from snowday fun to a day at the beach. There are also some fun with food projects (though this section doesn't offer much that's new if you already have any cooking with kids books). I've only had the book a week and I've already used several of the ideas -- my third grade son and I made the marshmallow snowman on page 129 for a school project and we used the backyard games section to plan party games for ten boys. That was a blast! This book reminded us of some old games we loved to play when we were kids and helped us think up some new games. The party was a big success and this is a great book to have on hand for those times you'd love to have the T.V. turned off and the kids tuned in to fun!

This is one of the items that we always pack into our 2 year old's bag when we go to church. She sits QUIETLY for about 1/2 hour while she does her lacing. The cards are very sturdy and lightly laminated so there is less risk of tearing, and somewhat water resistant. The packaging keeps it all together in the little box, making it easy to travel with. Good gift idea for a 2 - 3 year old.
