This review has been written by my friend in Milford Connecticut:
I have been a special education teacher of children and A university Professor of Special Education since 1964, and have never found a better book for general use by educators. This book runs the gamut, always clearly written in plain English rather than "psychologese" or jargon, easy to adapt to any age and any exceptionality, and should be a required source book for all teachers in America. I have already placed it on my list of required texts for the Fall semester at Southern CT State University, and I know that my students will thank me!

Great American Artists for Kids: Hands-On Art Experiences in the Styles of Great American Masters (Bright Ideas for Learning) Review

Great American Artists for Kids: Hands-On Art Experiences in the Styles of Great American Masters (Bright Ideas for Learning)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Great American Artists for Kids" (2008) is written in the tradition of my other best-selling art books, that is, it values the child's unique creativity, individual discovery, and joyful exploration of art. We often say "Process, not Product", but the activities presented are also satisfying to see. Each art project is all new and uses common materials like paint and glue. The most exciting aspect of the book is that it is packed with full color images of great masterpieces by great artists -- and also by amazing children! Full color images have been requested by many of my readers, and so I challenged myself and made it happen. Over 75 artists are featured, and the color examples of their art is fabulous. My website has sample pages you can download, as well as a full click-to list of masterpieces for each of the 75 artists. Go to: "www brightring dot com/greatamericanartists dot html" (URL's have to be written out on Amazon, sorry). Everyone who has seen this book says it has a really special spark. I hope you will like it too. I'm very proud of the quality of not only the art projects for kids, but the beautiful art-gloss paper and the full color images of great art.

Fun and easy art-appreciation activities abound in this resource that features 75 American artists from colonial times to the present. A brief biography for each artist tells why his or her work is important, and a kid-tested art activity tries out the artist's approach. For Georgia O'Keeffe, the activity is a desert painting; for Frederic Remington, a face cast; for Leroy Nieman, a sketch of athletes; and for James Whistler, a clay engraving. Projects stress the creative process and encourage kids to try unusual techniques such as block printing, soak-stain, and stone carving as they learn about architecture, drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture. A resource guide provides a glossary of art terms, a list that groups the artists by style, a list of the artists' birthdays, an index of art supplies, and websites for viewing art online.

The Sixth Anti-Coloring Book: Creative Activities for Ages 6 and Up (Anti-Coloring Books)

These books are great for allowing children to be creative. Each page presents an idea for the child to expand upon by drawing and coloring her own picture. There are no lines provided to be colored in. Each book in the series provides new pages and ideas for imaginative drawing, and the pictures created depend upon the child's imagination. I gave these books to a 7 and an 8 year old who absolutely love them. (Their parents liked them, too!) Older children would be able to expand upon the same ideas and create even more detailed pictures.

I used this book for my 6th grade Social Studies class. We had already studied the ancient history and economy of Greece and Rome and just completed a unit on Greek mythology. We ended the unit with the information and projects in this book. The projects were excellent and easy to do and the kids enjoyed them. We ended our unit with a big celebration using the suggestions for the Roman meal. I highly recommend this book!

This book contains one educational activity for each week of your childs life, from birth to age 5. Although you are humorlessly instructed to do the activities in order, repeating the activity-of-the-week daily, the book is still useful in real life. Every few weeks, I flip through the sections for my children's ages and get ideas. The activities are exactly age appropriate- even the ones for young babies. They generally (but not always) use stuff you have around the house. And they are often ideas you might not think of on your own. I have also found that the activities have a good time-enjoyed to clean-up-the-mess time ratio!

Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars: Grandma's Bag of Tricks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're a grandma or a mom (or even a nature-loving, kid-daffy grandpa or dad), you're going to be delighted by Sharon Lovejoy's latest book, Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars. It is the ultimate Granny Handbook, designed especially for those of us who are lucky enough to have at least one small child to introduce to life in the kitchen, the backyard, and the garden.
Sharon Lovejoy has always helped us to work with our kids in the garden, from her delightful Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots to Sunflower Houses; Hollyhock Days; and A Blessing of Toads.
But Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars is special, because it is designed as a "manual" for grandmas, and Lovejoy has crammed it full of playful activities that even grannies without green thumbs can manage and kids will absolutely love. To whet your appetite, here is a short sampling from the six chapters: Faerie Mailboxes, Firefly Lanterns, No-Bake Nests, Be a Pumpkin Parent, Potato Volcanoes, and Worm Hotel.
Want more? How about these chapter titles? Preparing Camp Granny (lots of fine ideas, even if you're a long-distance granny). Or The Neighborhood Naturalist, Kids in the Kitchen, the Kitchen Garbage Garden (starts with an activity called "Learning from Leftovers"), Kids in the Garden, and Rainy Day Activities. Each chapter offers recipes (Moon Pizzas, anybody?), games, and activities--each one a learning opportunity for both granny and grandkid. And best of all, the book overflows with color photographs and Lovejoy's delightful drawings of bugs, plants, food toys, and faeries. Every page is a treasure.
In her introduction, Lovejoy notes that being a grandmother is "one of the truest and purest joys" of her life, for her grandchildren have given her the gift of "child-sight": "the ability to stop, hunker down, and see things through their fresh, young eyes and minds." In Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars, Lovejoy shares that gift with her readers, through her playful art and the creative, imaginative activities she suggests. "Grandmotherhood is a state of grace," she says, a place of wonder and child-like delight. Toad Cottages & Shooting Stars will help you and your lucky grandchildren find that place and enjoy it--together.

Make leaf rubbings, learn the neighborhood bird songs together, turn an aquarium into a worm hotel, create a firefly lantern. There are garden projects, both for the outdoors-grow a container snacking garden, a pumpkin patch in a pot-and the indoors, i.e., how to use something called "indoor garbage gardens" to grow pineapple tops, sweet potato vines, peanuts, and more. Cooking projects, both in the sunshine-baking in a solar oven-and in the kitchen-what child will ever forget the time the two of you made Potato Volcanoes with Lava? And lots of rainy-day activities for times when nature's in a cranky mood. Created by Sharon Lovejoy-a grandmother of four and the author of two classic books of garden activities for grown-ups and kids, Sunflower Houses and Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots-Toad Cottages and Shooting Stars is an ecologically inspired guide that combines more than 130 green activities with timeless grandparenting advice. Illustrated with Lovejoy's distinctive, delicate watercolors, it's an inventive resource for grandmother and grandchild to connect with each other through nature. Arts and Crafts Busy Book : 365 Activities
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a first grade teacher for 12 years, so I really know arts and crafts books inside and out. This is an outstanding book. What sets this book apart from all of the other craft books out there is Trish's aversion to doing crafts with kids. She wrote that she just wasn't that into it. Therefore, she has written a book that has projects that require VERY little adult help, are easy, have little clean up, and best of all ~ they are really FUN for kids! I just open the book, read what is on the page, and set my 5 and 6 year old to work. For example, one day I opened the book and my kids found themselves at the kitchen table with mini marshmallows and toothpicks, building. Clean up for me: a few toothpicks on the floor. (and a week later sneaking it into the trash) They had a blast for the whole evening doing that. This is my favorite Arts and Crafts book. Really, her whole series is great, but I would start with this one. Happy Non Crafting!

Fairy Fun: A Child's Fairyland of Enchanting Projects and Magical Games

Based on previous reviews, I expected a lot more ideas from this book. In planning a birthday party for my 6-year-old daughter, I had hoped to find more practical crafts and games for children. I was dissappointed that few of the ideas were original-- many of them I already had. I mean, come on, I thought the page dedicated to making fairy invitations could be more creative than: Get a paper, fold it in half, write the party information on the inside and outside, glue sparkly things to the invitation, address and stamp the envelope, put the invitation inside, and mail it. I may adapt a couple of the crafts for our party, but the flower fairy dolls are too difficult for children to make themselves, and I think many of the crafts and games I already have will be more fun. If you are experienced with throwing good theme parties, you probably don't need this book. If you need ideas and don't have many of your own, this book will get you started.
