This book is filled with reproducibles that are well thought out and very relevant to the curriculum. The activities, for the most part, are not just "busy work" but will supplement your regular curriculum well. I was very satisfied with this book and would recommend it to any fifth or sixth grade teacher.

Hooks, Books, & Cooks is a teacher resource that examines 9 pieces of Children's Literature and presents an activity to gain the children's interest in the book (the Hook), a book-centered activity (the Book) and a cooking activity that relates to the book (the Cook). It is filled with many great ideas, along with plentiful illustrations and reproducible cutouts to be used in the teaching process. For those that have attended the Hooks, Books, & Cooks seminar presented by the authors, this is a must have companion document. For an example, in Chapter 1, Bones, Bones, Dinosaur Bones, by Byron Barton, Hooks, Books, & Cooks presents a song to sing called Spikey Sam, directions on how to make a Spikey Sam folder story (with reproducible art), instructions and art to make dinosaur caps and an aprons, and art to produce a cookbook for fossil cookies. There are also Dinosaur Cafe Menus and order pads to let the children pretend to run a Cafe.Hooks, Books, & Cooks is targeted to interest the 2 year old through 2nd grader. Library Lessons for Little Ones (Intermediate Collaborative Bridges) Review

Library Lessons for Little Ones (Intermediate Collaborative Bridges)
Average Reviews:

I just looked over the book to see what I could use for next year. Teaching K-6 in the library, this book is geared towards PK to K only and the lessons seem time-intensive to set up. Don't get me wrong, they are great ideas but you have to be prepared to devote a lot of time to making puppets for the class, getting the books, setting up an overhead, singing the songs, sending letters home to parents, etc. And this only applies to the Kinders and I am still left with 1st through 6th. I can only sing about half the songs to the familiar tunes, the others are not so easy and I am stumbling over matching the new verses to the original songs. There are great graphics to print out if you want to expand your puppet collection and there is a lesson on Caldecott Medals. The Pets to Ponder is an art lesson and I will use that for art class. I think you could get this book to add to your collection of resources but be aware of the prep involved which includes copying, cutting, coloring, laminating and gluing puppets. I may try one set for this year and another set for next year and so one. If you had a lot of volunteers, you could do this.

Baby Bargains: Secrets to Saving 20% to 50% on baby furniture, gear, clothes, toys, maternity wear and much, much more

Initially, this book was the end-all-be-all for us. After we found out we were pregnant with our first, several of our friends told us we MUST get this book. So we did, and the information contained within seemed all-encompassing, and like the only reference we'd ever need. As the months of my pregnancy continued on and our research on different items expanded and deepened, we started realizing that several of the Baby Bargains reviews didn't match up with reviews we were reading elsewhere, including on Amazon. The Baby Bargains authors have a tendency to review items with an authoritative tone that is not always warranted or based on in-depth research. To be sure, there is A LOT of research put into the book, but it also covers A LOT of items, so in some instances, certain items don't get the same scrutiny as others, but the reader can't really discern in which instances this is happening. It becomes more apparent as you start researching the items you've narrowed it down to using resources other than Baby Bargains. I was looking at baby monitors on Amazon the other day, and based on user review (actual parents), there were a couple monitors that jumped out at me as the best (no 1 or 2 star ratings -- all 4 and 5 stars, out of over 50 ratings). I looked up the brand in our Baby Bargains book, and found that it was rated "F"! And the reason the BB authors gave it an F is actually refuted by someone in the medical field in one of the 5 star Amazon reviews. That didn't sit real well with me, especially for something as important as a Baby Monitor. I've had other experiences like that with items recommended by Baby Bargains, where they say "get this not that", and I do some more googling, and find that parents are actually not too happy with the Baby Bargains-recommended items.
Is this book worth getting? Yes. It's a great, one-stop-shopping roadmap of sorts for all the STUFF you need / don't need, particularly useful for first-time parents. That said - it should not be considered the ONLY resource / authority on baby buying. Like all the manufacturers of all the baby stuff out there, Baby Bargains is also a business -- they're in it to make money as much as the next guy. There's nothing wrong with that, but I do think it's important to keep in the back of your head. While they don't get paid to recommend one brand over another, they DO get paid (by those of us who buy their books) for coming across as the "experts" on all things baby-related. And they simply aren't. I recommend starting with the book, narrowing it down to options you're considering, and then doing additional research on the items that really matter - crib, car seat, baby monitor, etc. Beyond that, I pay particular attention to recent reviews NOT in Baby Bargains written by folks in the medical / pediatric fields. While Baby Bargains will often say something like, "According to the American Academy of Pediatrics...", they rarely say "According to pediatrician Joe Smith..." In other words, you start to get the feeling that maybe they just googled the American Academy of Pediatrics and passively noted their regulations, rather than actually talking to a real pediatrician about a particular item. Anyway, in sum, get the book, and take into consideration what they say, but don't consider it the Gospel on baby merchandise...

Bought the book for a little inspiration on my camper project, I got some cool ideas that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. Not a technical book by any means, it is much more suited for a coffee table than the garage. Alot of the featured vehicles were older buses. There weren't as much vanagons as I had hoped.

Building Your Kevlar Canoe: A Foolproof Method and Three Foolproof Designs Review

Building Your Kevlar Canoe: A Foolproof Method and Three Foolproof Designs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book and used it to build an ultralight solo Kevlar canoe that I'm very happy with. It is not a complete, step-by-step guide; however -- you will have to use your ingenuity from time to time and read between the lines. I definitely recommend it if you want to build with Kevlar; indeed, it's the only book of its kind. But you should read it three times before you start building, and discuss its method with your resin/fabric supplier, who may give you valuable supplemental information. And, ideally, talk to someone who has already built a canoe using these methods. But the method which the author has developed is straightforward, and you don't need a fancy workspace to build your boat. I built mine outdoors, in the back yard, in a few weekends.

Kevlar is a strong (40% stronger than fiberglass) material, perfect for building light-weight (35 pounds for a 17-foot canoe), fast, maintenance-free canoes. The only problem with Kevlar canoes is their cost--$2,000 or more. With this book, the most inexperienced home builder can turn out a handsome canoe for an investment of about $600 and a few weekends. The principal tools needed are a sharp pair of scissors and a $5 hand plane--and the method is astonishingly easy and forgiving. Featured are designs for a stable family canoe, a solo canoe, and a wilderness tripper, any of which can be built right from this book.

Recently, I came across this fantastic book and quickly discovered it was so much more than just beautiful pictures and great ideas for customizing the interior of any automobile.
As I flipped through the glossy pages, I was immediately inspired and began coming up with great ways to use this information in all aspects of my decorating. We choose one of our room paint colors based on an interior we both liked in here and even took some of the upholstery ideas for recovering furniture in our office.
There is so much great stuff in here and best of all it's timeless. Everyone should have a copy of this book in their home. This is truly a book you'll want to have forever and it looks great on your coffee table too boot!

Billy Lane's How to Build Old School Choppers, Bobbers and Customs (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Billy Lane's How to Build Old School Choppers, Bobbers and Customs (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not a complete book on how to build a bike. That's a vast field including quite a few full careers, such as mechanic, fabricator, welder, machinists etc... Maybe some day, someone will actually write it down.
In this format all I really want is some fresh information direct from Lane, not ghost written or republished materials as in the Monster Garage welding book (at least they chose a good book). On that score I think this is a very solid addition. Lane does go into technical information; what years of what motor he prefers to use, how to align these old motor and drive train systems. What modern components are best, for instance brakes. How to wire. None of these are exhaustive, but they are what he does. For instance, he does not cover trail and rake calculations. He just comes out and tells you what his favorite front end on a chopper or bobber is. That's the inside info that defines a maker's look, and if a person followed that info they would not need to understand the universe of trail and rake, info that is on the internet anyway.
One of the things that impressed me is that, apparent beer ads for corona in the text aside, Lane seems pretty serious about the quality of the bikes he builds. A lot of his build-off stuff seems to break or catch on fire, and I have never been all that impressed with his signature tanks. However he shows a few hard core details here that as competent pieces of engineering, and very stout construction, are excellent. The book is full of details that never really get covered in the other stuff out there. I was just left feeling I could use a couple of other books in a series.
Books of this format, on everything from painting flames to cheap choppers, are one step up from a magazine. At their best, they cover a lot of ground. This one isn't perfect, but it covers a lot more stuff than several seasons of BBO, OCC, BOB, the horse etc... Those all seem to edit out anything more complicated than bolting an engine or tranny to a frame. I wish more builders would get into the nitty gritty like this. This is not a "How to build a Ford hot rod", by Mike Bishop, but it's about as good as it gets normally.

Billy Lane is the fastest-rising star among the high-profile custom chopper builders, and in this book he offers many of his secrets for building a chopper that will stand out in a crowd. This is the ultimate resource for any chopper builder-a book designed as a step-by-step guide to building any type of custom motorcycle. This book also covers custom-building beyond the chopper genre, including the building of "bobbers," an old-school style of custom that has been revived as a hot trend. Predating choppers, they are on the cutting edge of current biker "cool", for real riding, and are much safer and more functional than choppers. Billy Lane has been featured several times on the Discovery Channel's top rated series Biker Build-Off and the Monster Garage premiere episode. Plus, He was Easyriders Builder of the Year, and winner of numerous national Best in Show awards. This book shows Billy's inside secrets of constructing a complete motorcycle, from hand fabricating metalwork to adding the detail parts that will make your bike your own creation and stand out from the crowd. Backseat Saints Review

Backseat Saints
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
From the first sentence, Backseat Saints is a grab onto a live wire I couldn't let go of until I reached the last page. The day sweet, perfect Ro Grandee spots the tarot cards tumbling to the floor in front of an airport gypsy is the day realizes that her beautiful, abusive husband is going to be the death of her.
Ro gets a gun and begins to dig deep for the tough, smart-mouthing girl she once was, Rosa Mae Lolly, the girl who can save her own life, that same Rose Mae who dated the infamous Jim Beverly in Jackson's popular novel, GODS IN ALABAMA.
Racing from her relentless husband Thom, Rosa Mae runs looking for her disappeared high school boyfriend Jim, and then her long-lost mother to help find a way to finish off the man who both loves her and wants to murder her, running for her life from Texas to California by way of Alabama. She revisits her bruised-up childhood and knocked-around marriage to understand her flat out run toward a terrifying future before she finally lets herself love and trust.

I tend to shy from a dark subject like abuse in my entertainments, but Jackson's Rose is funny and smart, flawed and confused in a way that inspires compassion. She is messed up in the ordinary way many of us find ourselves in, and who wouldn't be, when every important person in Rose's life either abused or abandoned her? It was satisfying to watch her unravel her life and her choices and put the pieces back together in way that leads to the hope of a happy future.
Jackson's amusing wit, sharp characterizations and lovely use of language make Rose's moving and suspenseful story a joy to read.

Another Place at the Table Review

Another Place at the Table
Average Reviews:

Kathy's Harrison's memoir of her life as a foster parent to over one hundred children is at times funny, sad, and heart-wrenching, but always completely honest. She is honest about her own failures and weaknesses, about the difficulty in fostering troubled children, about the many shortcomings of the foster care system, and about the tremendous need each child in that system has for a loving, attentive family. She sugarcoats nothing, yet manages to show the reader each sweet, loving, unique child she took in under the labels of "abused," "troubled" and "mentally ill."
I began this book as someone who never imagined that I would want to be a foster parent, and finished it with the inspiration to pursue it as soon as possible. Harrison is not a superhero, as I previously imagined foster parents to be; she is an ordinary person who has given an extrodinary piece of herself to those members of our society who need it most. Her story, and that of the children she loves, deserves to be read.
