The Mercy Seat: A Joe Donovan Thriller Review

The Mercy Seat: A Joe Donovan Thriller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a non-stop hard hitting, realistic, and action packed thriller set in present day England, this is probably hard to beat. A really burnt out, even suicidal, ex-newsman becomes involved with about every crooked low life type that one may imagine, from bad cops to child molesters, and sadistic killers. Great descriptions of England's seamy urban side, and a really motley assortment of personages, mostly bad, make this a solid US debut! Thankfully, most of the gruesomeness and perversions are not described in detail, another feather in the cap of the author. Only four stars because, some of the characters and situations become almost cartoon-like, and an editor could have cut down on some repetitive phrases like "He Smiled", which are way over-done.

While you are reading this book you can feel the breeze coming through the open windows of a warm summer afternoon. The curtains are billowing and the radio is crackling with excitement. You can hear the crack of the bat, the sing of leather hitting wood. When on the road, going from city to city you are jostled by the motion of the train. Mr. Barber writes such a descriptive story, that you feel that you are right there as part of the story. This takes you back to a gentler time in life. I read this book at the start of every baseball season and never tire of it. I take it out of the library, I love the feel and the smell of the old yellowing pages, the black and white photographs. It puts me in the baseball mood. Sometimes, I feel as though Branch Rickey is going to join me for lunch.

For more than fifty years Red Barber was the voice of baseball. The game was broadcast sporadically until the late 1930s, when Barber burst into prominence by bringing it home to radio listeners, play by play. More than half a century later, he could still be heard, broadcasting over National Public Radio from his retirement home in Tallahassee. Announcing for the Brooklyn Dodgers and later for the New York Yankees, he became a legend long before his death in 1992. Red's story reveals the growth and changes in baseball over the years, the demands of sportscasting, and the difference between radio and television reporting. Here is Red giving major play-by-plays of his own life and career with characteristic wit and integrity.

No Seat at the Table: How Corporate Governance and Law Keep Women Out of the Boardroom (Critical America (New York University Paperback)) Review

No Seat at the Table: How Corporate Governance and Law Keep Women Out of the Boardroom (Critical America (New York University Paperback))
Average Reviews:

Corporate America has historically been a man's world. It has been a commonplace assumption that, as increasing numbers of women with the educational and professional skills needed to succeed in business began to climb the corporate ladder, women would inevitably assume their rightful share of high level positions in corporations. As this book demonstrates, this optimistic assumption has turned out to be untrue. Branson documents the continuing absence of women today in important positions in the corporate world, and then analyzes the reasons why this is still happening. He points both to legal rules and corporal cultural practices and policies that make it challenging for women to succeed at the highest level of corporate governance. In addition, he examines the social and cultural criteria that determine who will be seen as effective executives and who will not--criteria that make many women appear to be less qualified managers than they truly are. Branson suggests that changes in corporate culture and policies will be needed if American business is to successfully tap this underutilized talent pool. In a globalized world of increased competition, American business is ill-served by failing to maximize the contribution of this segment of the corporate work force.

Women are completing MBA and Law degrees in record high numbers, but their struggle to attain director positions in corporate America continues. Although explanations for this disconnect abound, neither career counselors nor scholars have paid enough attention to the role that corporate governance plays in maintaining the gender gap in America's executive quarters.

Mining corporate governance models applied at Fortune 500 companies, hundreds of Title VII discrimination cases, and proxy statements, Douglas M. Branson suggests that women have been ill-advised by experts, who tend to teach females how to act like their male, executive counterparts. Instead, women who aspire to the boardroom should focus on the decision-making processes nominating committees—usually dominated by white men—employ when voting on membership.

Filled with real-life cases, No Seat at the Table opens the closed doors of the boardroom and reveals the dynamics of the corporate governance process and the double standards that often characterize it. Based on empirical evidence, Branson concludes that women have to follow different paths than men in order to gain CEO status, and as such, encourages women to make flexible, conscious, and often frequent shifts in their professional behaviors and work ethics as they climb the corporate ladder.

Get Off My Bus: How to Get Clarity, Get in the Driver's Seat, and Get Moving in Your Life Review

Get Off My Bus: How to Get Clarity, Get in the Driver's Seat, and Get Moving in Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Get Off My Bus!" addresses something that is often a missing piece within personal development. The focus of personal development is, well, personal...it is about YOU. However, once you have worked on yourself enough to gain some clarity, focus, and insights as to what makes you tick, why it motivates you to take action, and the ultimate results which that can produce, that is only part 1 of a 2 part discovery. Part 2 has to do with the people with whom you choose to surround yourself!
The analogy is simple and resonates with a large population. You are born and you are a bus driver. As you drive your bus through your life, people are constantly getting on and getting off of your bus. Some are by choice (you invite them in), while others are there by virtue of the decisions you choose to make (where you go to school, where you work, the organizations with which you choose to be associated, etc.). However, there comes a point in each life when "something happens." That may be a job loss, it may be a health issue, it may even be a point at which you have to make a change because you can no longer stand what you are doing! It is at that point that you have to turn around and take a good look at your passengers. You must then ask yourself 5 questions, the questions addressed in "Get Off My Bus!" Who is driving my bus (is it me or someone else)? Where am I going (am I just wandering around the streets or do I have a destination)? Who needs to get off my bus? Who needs to get on my bus? Who's bus do I need to get off of?
The message is that YOU are only half of the equation. You are only as successful as the people with whom you are choosing to surround yourself. Are you choosing wisely?

Are your passengers healthy or toxic?OK, here is the analogy: You are a bus driver in life and you have an empty bus. When you are born, certain people take a seat on your bus immediately when you pop out (mom, dad, family, etc.).Throughout life, you pick people up on your bus and you drop people off along the way.People are constantly getting on and off of your bus. Some are invited, while others are just along for the ride by virtue of your decisions about life and work. You also have people on your bus who are always on your bus, but move from the front to the back and then from the back to the front, but they are always there on your bus. Then you have people throughout your life that you pick up and drop off more than once.People who truly do go out of your life and truly come back into your life for a reason. Some of these passengers are healthy and some are toxic. So what?Well...the passengers on your bus play a vital role in your success (or lack there of). However, without clarity about who you are and where your bus is going, it is difficult to know whether your passengers are there to help you or hurt you. Get Off My Bus! takes you on a journey out of your head.Simply put, there are things in life over which you have zero control and there are things in your life over which you have complete control.Chances are, like most people in our society, you spend way too much of your time and energy focusing on those things you cannot control instead of the very few, very important things over which you have total control. That, of course, creates stress. This self-inflicted stress is what stops you from doing what you keep saying you want to do (but never do)...which creates (you guessed it) more stress! It also creates an awful lot of regret as you start to look over your shoulder at the things you "never got around to doing." It is important to realize that you are in control of stopping and letting somebody off of your bus or stopping and letting someone climb aboard. So, how do you "flip the switch?"How do you stop creating stress in your life and move towards something more fulfilling? How do you make choices to ensure your passenger list is in concert with both your journey and destination? How do you stop choosing to be miserable and start choosing to be happy?Do not kid yourself...you choose it all.Get Off My Bus! helps you to gain clarity and start building a roadmap. It will help you confidently get in the driver's seat of your bus, know where you are going, and make sure the right passengers are on board (and the wrong ones are let off at the next stop!). If you are ready to begin your journey, gaining control of your world takes place within these pages.

Take a Seat -- Make a Stand: A Hero in the Family Review

Take a Seat -- Make a Stand: A Hero in the Family

(More customer reviews)
Even though she wore an Army uniform and was in service of her country what happened to Sarah Keys Evans to make her a hero did not happen on the battlefields. Author Amy Nathan puts together a non-fiction children's book that deals with some real important issues and some civil rights history. Her book "Take A Seat - Make A Stand: A Hero In The Family" is about real courage and about doing the right thing.
The book details what happened to Sarah Evans back in 1952 when she was a young black woman serving her country in the Women's Army Corps. She refused to give up her seat on a bus on her way back to camp and was put in jail and fined. This happened three years before Rosa Parks did the same thing. The story follows her as she fights injustice; and after years of legal work, she gets some laws changed. It is truly an inspirational story that is not only just for children but people of all ages.
I had never heard this women's story before nor anything about her successful battles in the congress to change the laws, but this book opened up that as new history to me. I think this book will educate many people about who some of our unsung heroes of the civil rights battles were. I am sure that there must be many more whom history has no long-term memory of. If this book inspires young people to go and look for more "heroes" that would be a most wonderful gift indeed.
This book is highly recommended for children from age of 10 and up including adults like myself who enjoyed reading it.

This book tells of Sarah Keys Evans, an unsung Civil Rights hero. As a young woman in the Women's Army Corps in 1952, she did what Rosa Parks did—three years before Rosa Parks. Sarah Keys Evans kept standing up for her rights until victory was won. Her story shows that an individual can have an impact on history, and that in troubled times ordinary people can step up and accomplish remarkable things. Her story also shows that change is a step-by-step process. Many small contributions along the way help to bring about big shifts in attitudes and laws."Sarah Keys, a courageous Army private, helped set the stage for the civil rights movement in the 1950s by seeking and getting a legal ruling outlawing discrimination on seating on buses and proving that justice can be there for each of us."Wilma L. Vaught, Brigadier General, USAF (retired); President, Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation, Inc."Sarah Keys fought her battle against segregation and humiliations as a matter of moral decency and learned first hand about mental and physical fear thus exemplifying extraordinary courage..."Representative Major R. I am an upper level reining competitor who took a class in Hunter/Jumpers to broaden my knowledge and skills in the Jumper world. This book was used as a text for the class. The book begins with a comprehensive overview of the basic principles of horsemanship and leads into advanced concepts, including tips for AHSA tests and a glossary of terms. White-Mullin also addresses a rider's nervousness during competition. Excellent photography and drawings help explain to the brain what the eye is reading! I was very impressed with the level of correctness. I appreciate the confidence and understanding it has given me this discipline and aspect of riding. Excellent for any level of rider desiring to learn. I can't believe there has been no reviews published on this book. It sits on the "most used reference" shelf in mine!

This one was first published in 1978 and was selected as a Junior Literary Guild selection, for older readers. The book is not just of interest for junior readers though. It is loaded with much interesting (if not overly technical) information and the black and white illustrations and photographs alone make the book worth owning. The books is well written and quite readable. If you can find a copy and if this is an area of interest, it is certainly one I would recommend for your collection.

I really like to read this book to my little sister, Julianna. She likes it, too. Her favorite part is when he goes to his Grandma and Grandpa's house. She likes to read it to herself, she knows all of the words and "reads" along with me, but sometimes she takes it away from me when I'm reading it to her because she likes it so much! My family likes to hear her say the car seat has a "ticky pot or two". It is one of her favorite books! The end. Elizabeth

Received this "How to Fit a Car Seat on a Camel" as a gift and practically wet myself reading the stories. Some were seriously hilarious, some were ew-w-w, some were really quite touching.
This is the perfect book to take along on a trip, when you want only short easy things to read. And, maybe, reading about someone else's misadventures will make whatever problems you're facing seem minor in comparison.
Anyway, I always think that books make great gifts and this one would be perfect for mothers of small children. After receiving and reading it, I bought another copy for a friend. She immediately bought another copy for another friend.
It's that kind of book.

Outsmart The Unexpected: Grow Your Creativity The Edge-Of-Your-Seat Way

It is an interesting concept for a book and it encourages readers to use their imaginations. The situations the characters find themselves in can sometimes seem very dire and in some cases I found myself thinking, "Oh no! This cannot end well", but the beauty of the book is that if you like happy endings, it is up to you to use your creativity to find one.
The book encourages you to ask questions and analyze the various scenarios from different angles. What are the issues? What significant information is omitted? What reasonable solutions (or unreasonable solutions) are possible? This book is a fun activity for an evening home with friends (game night for critical thinkers). You can read the book out loud and discuss the possible outcomes. It is interesting to see what conclusion other people draw and their reasoning. The discussions can lead to some very stimulating conversations and your friends may even surprise you with the conclusions they draw. You may even gain some new insights into your own creativity and critical thinking skills.

On Rocky Top: A Front-Row Seat to the End of an Era Review

On Rocky Top: A Front-Row Seat to the End of an Era
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The 2008 football campaign is one that most University of Tennessee fans are eager to put behind them and forget about. It started off with great promise, only to see it all coming crashing down in a manner of weeks, leading to a free fall that saw the Vols drop from defending SEC East champs to the termination of long-time coach Phillip Fulmer.
When writer Clay Thomas agreed to write a book chronicling the season of the 2008 UT Volunteers football season, he had visions of a trip to Atlanta for the SEC title game and possibly the chance to celebrate the 10th anniversay for the 1998 national title by competiting for another one. Instead, what he got was the story of a season in turmoil and a program at a crossroads. And all of that is chronicled in his new book, "On Rocky Top: A Front-Row Seat to the End of an Era."
Thomas' chronicle of the 2008 season from a fan turned journalist perspective is a fascinating one. It may be hard for a lot of UT fans (myself included) to relive the horror that was last year. Thomas has some fascinating insights in the book, including one that stated he felt more comfortable in the stands, pulling for the team than he did on the sidelines watching as things unfolded. He also examines some of the aspects of the passionate fans--both himself and others--wondering if they know how the players view the games they play each Saturday and the impact what they say and how they act have on the players. Thomas talks to Arian Foster and his family at several points in the unfolding narrative, looking at how Foster entered the season with the chance to become the leading rusher in UT history and ended the season as a goat of sorts and possibly having his chances for an NFL career go up in flames.
But make no mistake that the focus of this book is Fulmer. Fulmer began the season as the dean of SEC coaches and was facing a crossroads. Despite making it to the title game three times in a decade, the Vols hadn't won an SEC title since 1998. He was also bringing in a new offensive coordinator, who was told he would be the next guy with Fulmer decided to retire in a few years.
And then the season began with a road loss to LSU and quickly spiralled out of control, leading to the moment when ahtletic director Mike Hamilton felt the time had come to replace Fulmer. One interesting chapter shows two boosters and their views on Fulmer and why he should be either allowed to stay and given time to right the ship or why he should be removed as head coach. Both sides have some interesting arguements and, in the end, it comes down to a decision of whether to go with your head or your heart in keeping or firing Fulmer. Hamilton looked at the bottom line with declining attendance and the lack of a bowl game on the horizon and made the call.
The chronicle of what happened is peppered by personal observations by Travis, wondering whye he cares so much about the team and its successes or failures. He also examines the growing trend of bloggers and Internet chat rooms, discussing not only Fulmer but also the players and their impact. And, along the way, Travis litters in some history of the Vols--not only their history as a team, but his own moments that defined him as a Vols fan.
Oh and he calls Urban Meyer a midgit wrestler, too. Pure gold, if you hate all things Florida.
The book weaves in stories of the impact Fulmer had both on the field and and off it. And it also makes you wonder if UT didn't sell out the last little bit of its old soul and that of the old SEC to try and become a national powerhouse by hiring Lane Kiffin.
If you've a UT fan, this is a must read. But I think the story and observations go deeper than that. If you're an SEC football fan or a college football fan, this is essential reading. The questions about the cost and price of winning and being a national powerhouse are shaking as well as the implications of the new hires at various schools around the SEC. Travis argues that a part of the identity of the South was lost when Fulmer was fired becuase he truly was one of the last of the old guard who attended the school he coached at and cares passionately about the program beyond the wins and losses. Again, read the chapters on the trainers or the man who drives the equipment to and from road games to see how Fulmer was more than just the guy who coached the team on Saturday afternoons and how great a loss his firing truly will be to the UT program long term.
Travis asks some hard questions and offers no easy answers in the book. But if you want to really get inside the program and understand a bit more of all that went on last year, then this is a must read.

There is no college football team more zealous and competitive than the University of Tennessee Volunteers

When Clay Travis, acclaimed author of Dixieland Delight, decided to spend the 2008 season up close and personal with UT football, he—and every other college football aficionado—thought he was in for a rollicking ride with one of the leading contenders for the national title. After all, when the Vols kicked off the season on September 1, the defending SEC East champions were ranked 18th in the country. As head coach Phillip Fulmer prepared for the game, he reflected upon a coaching career that included an astounding 147 victories, two SEC championships, and a national title. With 34 years at UT under his belt as both a player and coach, the Tennessee native had just signed a contract extension that projected to keep him at the university long enough to become the winningest coach in program history.

But when the Volunteers lost their season opener and the losses continued to mount, it became clear that 2008 was going to be a season on the brink for UT football. By December, the team had suffered its second-worst season ever, and Fulmer, the most beloved and recognized man in Tennessee, had been fired.

Based on exclusive interviews with Fulmer, UT athletic director Mike Hamilton, university boosters, team personnel, players and their families, and fans, On Rocky Top recounts in vivid detail how a season of promise tragically ended an era of college football. Enlivening the narrative is a diverse cast of supporting characters, including 65-year-old "Good Time" Charlie Harris, who has driven the UT big rig for almost 10 years; star running back Arian Foster, a fifth-year senior striving to become the all-time leading rusher in Volunteer history; and multimillionaire booster John "Thunder" Thornton, who defended Fulmer till the end.

A lifelong Volunteer fan whose grandfather played for the team during the 1930s, Travis reports from the locker room to the sideline, and has created a fascinating and loving chronicle of an impassioned state, a celebrated football culture, a beloved coach, and the sensational collapse of a once-mighty juggernaut.

Although I live in Hilton Head, S. Carolina, I'm a native New Yorker who spent many wonderful evenings at concerts and the theatre. I therefore didn't know how valuable this book would be until I planned a return visit this past month.
A family relative is performing at The Met at Lincoln Center and one of my sisters was getting the tickets. What she was told were the "best available seats" in fact weren't and she later found out from the performer that there is a "family section." I opened my copy of "Seats" and sure enough, there it was.
I also purchased tickets for "Hairspray." At $240/ticket, I was adamant that unless I got fabulous seats I wouldn't pay the price. After finding several offerings of seats that were less than great, I came upon some in the 3rd row orchestra front and center. Had I not had "Seats" I would have beem back and forth on the internet trying to find a current seating chart .
I have since bought the book for my sisters, brother and mother (great Christmas gifts).
Knowledge is power and you've got it with "Seats"!

The fact that they are a permanent part of a house makes it more critical that they be done with as much skill and imagination as possible. That's where the New Built-Ins Idea Book comes in. Written by Sandor Nagyszalanczy, a former senior editor of Fine Woodworking magazine and an acknowledged expert in the field, this illustrated guide shows step-by-step how to create built-ins that are both practical and appealing. Here are hundreds of design ideas for projects for every room of the house, including kitchens, bathrooms, libraries, kids' spaces, dining rooms, bedrooms, and the increasingly popular media spaces. The book shows a wide range of possibilities for incorporating built-ins, from niches to bookcases to spaces that replace those stacks of clothing in the closet. Complete coverage of materials, lighting, color, and hardware, along with careful, comprehensible drawings and photographs, is included.
