An Anatomy of Riding Review

An Anatomy of Riding
Average Reviews:

This book put me in the ribbons in equitation classes on a backyard pinto, but it's not an easy book to read. This is a book about the ANATOMY of the human being as it affects riding. It took me about an hour a page. The authors are dressage riders and physicians, they do not dumb the subject down. There are pictures, but you must concentrate to learn. I can remember the moment I applied my understanding to the posting trot. My instructor exclaimed "Two years of lessons and you've finally got it!" I never told him it wasn't his lessons. For difficulty of language, this is an adult's book.

Build a Better Athlete: 16 Gymnastic Exercises for Your Horse Review

Build a Better Athlete: 16 Gymnastic Exercises for Your Horse

What a great surprise. Here is an inexpensive manual with clear definitions, excellent photographs and diagrams as well as sections on what not to do, what can go wrong and how to fix it. The exercises build from basic to more advanced. I found her half-halt method to be simple and subtle but worked to stabilize even my NASCAR-minded mare. She suggests multiple methods to determine the correct timing to apply the aides. This book was recommended by a friend and I believe it is the most user-friendly, helpful book in my library. I'll pass the recommendation along to you wholeheartedly.

Learning to Ride, Hunt, and Show Review

Learning to Ride, Hunt, and Show

Learning to Ride, Hunt, and Show by Gordon Wright was reprinted at the suggestion of George H. Morris, who was one of Wright's riding students. Love Morris' Intro!
I remember reading the first printing of this book back when I was beginning my Unicorn Stables in Salisbury, MD and later I reread it while the Riding Director at Bryn Mawr Summer Camp in northeast, PA. Wright's explanations of equine terminology and proper horsemanship for beginners through advanced were invaluable in my riding programs.
I taught my students the use of the four natural aids, the many types of rein contact, the differences and uses of the two point and three point positions, and the phases of jumping an obstacle - all learned from this book.
The final chapter explains Advanced Horsemanship - such as F.E.I. rules, Fox Hunting and Pony Club tips.

Winning: A Training and Showing Guide for Hunter Seat Riders Review

Winning: A Training and Showing Guide for Hunter Seat Riders
Average Reviews:

I am an upper level reining competitor who took a class in Hunter/Jumpers to broaden my knowledge and skills in the Jumper world. This book was used as a text for the class. The book begins with a comprehensive overview of the basic principles of horsemanship and leads into advanced concepts, including tips for AHSA tests and a glossary of terms. White-Mullin also addresses a rider's nervousness during competition. Excellent photography and drawings help explain to the brain what the eye is reading! I was very impressed with the level of correctness. I appreciate the confidence and understanding it has given me this discipline and aspect of riding. Excellent for any level of rider desiring to learn. I can't believe there has been no reviews published on this book. It sits on the "most used reference" shelf in mine!

This series is great for the beginner rider...I found it very helpful. Sylvia Loch is great.

The essence of classical riding is being "at one" and in tune with the horse. It is not mystical or complex, and is open to all riders who wish to improve their own and their horse's performance. No rider - whatever level they are at - should feel it is beyond them. In "The Classical Seat - a Guide for the Everyday Rider", Sylvia Loch shows how all riders can attain a correct (and hence, safe) classical seat - one that is deep, balanced and sensitive, and gives maximum control.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The Complete Guide to Hunter Seat Training, Showing, and Judging: On the Flat and Over Fences Review

The Complete Guide to Hunter Seat Training, Showing, and Judging: On the Flat and Over Fences

I had previously used Anna Jane's book on Judging Hunter Seat Equitation and loved it - this book surpasses that one! The photographs are excellent, descriptive, and complete the narrative. The line drawings are an excellent way to assist students in understanding what we are trying to convey. The explanations of correct execution of the tests are superb. I also coach an interscholastic riding team and testing is required, so I have begun using these explanations to enhance the weekly work. I have recommended this book to other trainers and my riding students and will continue to share it with others.

The technical aspects of judging are covered in later chapters, with full details on scoring for all classes, including conformation, under saddle, hunter over fences, equitation on the flat, and equitation over fences. A final round of hints and tips for show day provides an insider's look at what officials are really thinking as they write their judge cards.
