This book is not the comprehensive guide that some people may be looking for but it does provide one more set of data points. I found the discussion of ignition options and the Miata seat conversion to be worth the price of the book while I was dismayed that the only Weber carbs reviewed were the triple 40/45 DCOE's that require extensive engine mods, with no mention of the dual DGV option that would work better on a road car. Many of the parts for suggested upgrades are from small UK suppliers that US readers may find difficult to access. If nothing else it is an interesting read and will provide food for thought while the New England permafrost sets in.

Super Freakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance
Average Reviews:

I had to laugh as I read some of the negative reviews. Listen people, it's not intended to be a TEXTBOOK, nor is it written like one, thankfully. I've read both books. Super Freakonomics is a good exercise in critical thinking (something that is becoming sorely lacking in the age of American Idol, thanks to our putrid public schools and Playstation parenting); it makes you think about a lot of "truths" that we take for granted. For example, this book actually made me change some of my thinking about global warming. The book is super-interesting, and full of information that you'd be hard-pressed to find in your typical daily reading; and, it "sexes-up" the fields of microeconomics and behavioral economics. One of the points (relentlessly made) is how we (especially our governments) seem to prefer complex, costly solutions to problems, when cheaper, simpler solutions often exist, and the book does a great job of providing many examples of this. Is it a definitive tome on the many topics it covers? No - again, it's not a textbook, but it was definitely worth the time I spent reading it - I hated putting it down.

My family went on a 12 hour car trip, and I purchased 2 of these-one for an 8 year old and one for a 5 year old. It was great for the 8 year old-he loved everything about it. It was a little over the 5 year olds head, but he had fun "pretending" to do everything. So, all in all, I am so glad I got the book-it made the trip fun--we all loved looking for new license plates!!

Doing Business with Japanese Men: A Woman's Handbook

As a Japanese businesswoman working for some 20 years, I believe this book will help a lot for those women doing business with Japanese men. Especially those who are new to Japan. Unfortunately, Japanese business world is still male-oriented, and most of Japanese businessmen don't know how to deal with women in business. One of the Japanese businesswomen's complaints is, "Japanese men treat business women only in three manners. Treat them as their wives, daughters, or hostesses at the night bars. They just don't know how to treat them as a collogue or business partner乧" This book consists of actual experiences of many foreign women and how they dealt with. Those experiences are no exaggeration from my eyes. It will be a good preparation to know what you may confront in Japan.

How to Restore and Customize Auto Upholstery and Interiors (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

How to Restore and Customize Auto Upholstery and Interiors (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I really like these Motorbook workshop series. These guys are taking automobile how-to books to a new level. This one is really good and ranks up there with those written by Don Taylor on upholstery/interior subject matter. I found this and his books make a strong basis for doing upholstery for the do-it yourselfer. I needed these books for my airplane, but the process is pretty much the same for an auto and these are really the only things out there.
This book is really good and I belive it is a complement and fills in the blanks where Taylors books left off. For example I found Taylors books great on Armrests, Panels and sewing tips, but then this book is great on seats and especially foam work. Taylors explains panels really well, but this goes onto discuss painting them too, if thats what your into.
You can't go wrong buying all these books as a set and at $40-50 for all of em, thats small peas compared to the price of taking a chance on the 3-7 video series that exisit out there on trying to explain what these books do.
If your working on a homebuilt or ceritfified GA aircraft these are really your only choices, do not think even the EAA has courses on this subject, althouhg your homebuilt manufacturer may have something.
What I would really have liked to have seen is a 1-2 page discussion of foam and ergonomics in car seating. Using tradition poly foam vrs some of the more exotic confor or memory foam would be nice.

Where does the proud owner of a cherished car spend the most time? Inside the car, meaning the look and feel of the interior and upholstery are top priorities, especially for builders and buyers of custom cars. This book provides detailed coverage of upholstery and interior options, including the variety of materials, projected costs, tools used, and more. The information is complemented by sequences of step-by-step, how-to photography. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work Review

Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me first express that I typically have great condescension for most "self-help"-type books. Most of them seem very intent on getting one to do yoga or meditation or breathing exercises....activities I'm just not naturally inclined to do. This book, in contrast, suggests improved perspectives and outlooks. So, it is "intellectual" in that way, rather than the typical "touchy-feely." It provides gentle, insightful wisdom into modifying the only things you can control: your own outlook, your own behavior. Quite frankly, I'm very impressed by this Richard Carlson. This book was exactly what I needed to help me through a very negative phase of my career as a government lawyer, with bizarre stressors coming from every direction, including judges, opposing attorneys, and peers. I can't say this book made me glad that I became a lawyer, but it helped quell the storm. This book is written so that virtually anyone can understand it, and yet it contains brilliant insights and what I would have to almost call "ultimate truths." Some of them are so obvious that it's disconcerting I couldn't identify them by myself; others are more transcendental, and Carlson very sagely unveils the phenomenon and associated principles.
I think anyone in a stressful work environment would benefit from reading this book. I read it very closely and highlighted about half the book. I know it will take some time for me to assimilate all of the suggestions, but this book planted the seeds and should surely help me cope better in the future with work-related difficulties.
You should be forewarned: you'll probably realize a lot of your stress is self-induced. I found myself cringing with the sudden realization of several self-destructive behaviors which I've had through the years. I think you need to be particularly open to effectuating personal change and breaking out of bad habits. For example, I never previously thought of myself as a "back-stabber"; instead I thought of myself as a rhetorically amusing and insightful critic and identifier of "office realities." Carlson really sensitized me as to the need to be circumspect about any kind of negative commentary about others, bearing in mind that whatever one says about someone or something is inevitably going to be spun by office gossips into the most negative light conceivable. That results in tension and resentment and stress. I now try to reserve my commentary (usually humorous anecdotes) about co-workers, etc. to acquaintances far outside my office. He also really brought home to me the principle of the destructive effect of complaining and griping about one's job; all that is accomplished is that one's negative view is reinforced, emphasized, perhaps even exaggerated by those other parts of your mind that hear you complaining. It becomes a vicious, snow-balling cycle of discontent. I suspect a lot of people intuitively think of it as "ventilating" one's frustrations and being helpful as such. I try now to not complain (in my case it was about boredom and the lack of professional growth). This has freed me up to seek out a remedies both inside and outside my employment scenario.
But, I cite the above only as examples. Carlson lays his recommendations out in 100 small chapters. I would say I learned something very useful from about 80 of them. I am very confident the long-term professional benefits will be significant. We're living in a very stressful time and a stressful culture. Focusing on the art of managing stress is almost mandatory if you want to thrive.

The Mind of the Soul: Responsible Choice Review

The Mind of the Soul: Responsible Choice
Average Reviews:

This wonderful book explains the value of making choices bearing the consequences in mind. This is responsible choice and Gary Zukav has got it right. I recommend this book because it helps readers take control of their lives. All we have is the power of choice. We can't control others, even though we may influence them (if they are open to that). I also suggest another brilliant book, Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self which shows you how to accept what is out of your control and make the best choices from what is in your control. In Optimal Thinking, you are provided with simple roadmaps to overcome all painful emotions (anxiety, helplessness, anger, guilt, disappointment, envy, hurt, loneliness etc.) and strategies to create your best life. Both of these books are must reads!

Average Reviews:

This book offers more information for those seeking to do a proper restoration and should be on any Panhead fan's book shelf.
It has very good quality photos of period bikes with close ups of most. That is also the one weak link for this book. The bikes are period pieces and not totally original machines with a couple of exceptions. This is in no way a knock against the book or it's author, it's just the best of what is available. Totally correct machines are very rare. In support of the author, he does point out what is not correct on many of the photos. When used with his earlier book, Harley-Davidson Panheads, you have a very good resource and for that I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in this subject.

Auto Upholstery & Interiors (HPBOOKS 1265) Review

Auto Upholstery and Interiors (HPBOOKS 1265)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book covers too many topics and does not provide adequate detail on any specific area of auto interiors. For example, the book states that seat foam should be replaced with the proper density foam, but does give any information on density specifications or typical foam types and densities used in auto seats. The book also devotes considerable space to subjects such as: painting, rust treatment, polishing and cleaning. These subjects are too general to be included in a book specific to upholstery and interiors. Many of the photographs are "before and after" pictures which do not aid in explaining methods or techniques. Not recommended for the do-it-yourselfer looking for complete step by step procedures. The book contains only 136 numbered pages.

Early-Start Potty Training Review

Early-Start Potty Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a stay-at-home mom of a 15-month-old. I am also a trained Montessori teacher. I have used cloth diapers with my son from the time he was one-month-old. I have seen many children toilet train before age 2.
So, I came to this book agreeing with some of what the author had to say. I think she makes a good case for changing our society's preconceptions about toilet training, but this book is short on extensive practical advice that parents (and teachers) need.
The author does not approve of any sort of diaper, particularly disposables. However, she recommends cloth diapers as a lesser of 2 evils sort of thing. Her advice on laundering diapers is laughably out-of-date (treated wet pail, wash 3 times(!), etc.). Washing machines are far more evolved than the author realizes, and I would not use cloth diapers if it were as much trouble as she describes. She even thinks you still have to pin prefolds.
Some of the ideas in this book are useful, but it will have to be supplemented with books that go into greater detail. It cannot be the only book you read for potty training info.
If you want to read a book written by someone with very strong opinions about early potty training and the problems with diapers, then you may like this book. If you want a more balanced approach, I would pass over this one.

The time-tested, gentle, and successful method that introduces children to potty training as early as six months

While parents around the world successfully potty train their children well before preschool age, in the United States, we've moved away from this early introduction. However, there's no evidence that later is better--in fact, there's even significant reason to believe that later can be detrimental.

Written by a respected child psychologist, Early-Start Potty Training shows why the early-start method is preferable to the commonly used readiness method. Waiting until children show signs of readiness can hold them back from preschool, cost a fortune in diapers, and lead to health problems. The early-start method avoids these concerns by starting the process of training as early as six months old.

This easy-to-follow program provides you with:

Time-tested training tips for introducing toddlers--and even infants--to the potty
Methods for combating common problems of training delay
A troubleshooting plan for moving toddlers from diapers to potty independence
Hints on how to overcome accidents and build confidence in children

Why Men Don't Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes: The Ultimate Guide to the Opposite Sex Review

Why Men Don't Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes: The Ultimate Guide to the Opposite Sex
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The basic attempt with this book was to use sex differences - which are all the rage these days - to make a relationships self-help book. The self-help stuff requires the usual and worn-to-death case studies of couples, followed by nice/neat explanations showing us just how simple all this really is, while the sex differences material requires a more expository approach, discussing the latest in brain research, etc. The net result is that instead of being coherent, the book comes across as being schizo, like it can't decide which kind of book it really wants to be. Or maybe the two different authors wrote different chapters. In other words, some of the book is good, a lot of it is so-so, and the rest not so great. At times it's even ridiculous.
The sex differences stuff is so watered down and simple-minded as to be virtually ludicrous (not to mention useless). Men are one-track minded hunters and women are caring/nurtering gatherers in this black and white universe. Consequently, they're able to give simple and definite answers to nuanced questions and situations which are, of course, a little more complicated than they'd like to think.
In spite of a page in the intro making one think the authors are sympathetic to men, the net portrayal is of belching, farting, dirty-joke telling louts who won't put the toilet seat down, ask for directions, or let go of the TV remote - just like in any sitcom. There's even a section on "retraining your man". The section on lieing starts out by assuring us men and women lie in equal amounts, but then devolves into illustrating all the ways men lie to women. I suppose we could have guessed from the cover being 70% pink that this book was mostly aimed at a female audience and therefore needs to constantly remind them how superior they are to men. And there's some misleading info on how much men need/want women, for example it's stated without qualification that any/all sex for men is good, though I can assure the authors that most men know very well the difference between good and bad sex, and all the shades between.
I found annoying all the plugs and mentions scatterd thru the text of the authors' previous book. Also annoying were sentences that I'd just read repeated in bold type in between paragraphs, like I'd missed them the first time; though sometimes these bold face bits have quotes or not-too-funny jokes. Altogether this wasn't a very good book. Maybe 2 1/2 stars max.

Do you know the top seven things men do that drive women nuts? Or the real reason women cry more than men do? What are men really looking for in a woman—both at first sight and for the long-term? These are only the starting points for Barbara and Allan Pease as they discuss the very real—and often very funny—differences between the sexes. Why Men Don't Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes takes a look at some of the issues that have confused men and women for centuries. Using new findings on the brain, studies of social changes, evolutionary biology, and psychology, the Peases teach you how to make the most of your relationships—or at least begin to understand where your partner is coming from. They help women understand why men avoid commitment, what drives them to lie, and how to decode male speech to find out what they are really saying. They explain to men why women nag, how they use emotional blackmail, and how to understand (and take advantage of!) the top-secret scoring system all women apply. They also dish about the top turn-ons--and turn-offs--for both sexes. Laced with their trademark humor, Why Men Don't Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes addresses a host of nitty-gritty battlegrounds as well, from channel surfing and toilet seats to shopping and communication. Already a #1 bestseller in the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Holland, Spain, Brazil, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, France, Czech Republic, India, Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, Why Men Don't Have a Clue and Women Always Need More Shoes is the answer to understanding the opposite sex.
