Erma Bombeck will always be one of my heroes. I still have her picture from the cover of Time magazine hanging on my "Wall of Fame" in my laundry room, along with my college diploma, a picture of the first woman to run for Vice-President, and various cards with special significance from family and friends. When I was a young mom, her writing always reminded me that laughter is better than tears. Whenever I thought that I could not possibly survive this child-rearing thing, I would pick up one of Erma's books and find out that she already survived the same hair-raising incidents and still had brain power. I still treasure many quotes I have picked up from her books. She wrote an article once about children becoming the parents to their own parents. She stated that she knew that was happening the time she hit the brake on her car and instinctively put out her arm in front of her mother who was riding in the passenger seat. How that image tugged at my heartstrings when it happened with my own mother. She wrote about everyday life, common to most of us with humor, poignancy, and great love. I will be giving her books to young parents as long as I live. Her words should be treasured by every generation.

The Thurber Carnival (Perennial Classics) Review

The Thurber Carnival (Perennial Classics)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Thurber Carnival" was a beloved companion of my early youth; I laughed out loud again and again at the stories of "My Life and Hard Times," the hilarious "Fables for Our Time," "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," and other classics. What was really important to me about Thurber was that he came from the same part of Ohio that I did, and actually had had relatives and attended family reunions in Sugar Grove, Ohio, where I grew up. That meant all the world to me, because it showed me that someone who had ties to Sugar Grove could be a famous writer. Now, I love Thurber's work more than ever; as an adult, I can better appreciate the nuances of a story like "The Catbird Seat." Thurber's work is a precise, funny, yet deeply serious portrait of an America which had just recently completed the transition from a frontier to an urban society. Women, having just won the right to vote, were flexing new-found muscles; men, divorced from the need to wrest a living from the soil, felt suddenly unmoored and emasculated; a new breed of self-help authors arose to make a quick buck from the newly uncertain populace; and oceans of alcohol fueled the newly stirred resentments between the sexes.Thurber recorded it all, in a prose style as elegant and lucid as any in the history of American literature. "The Catbird Seat," "Fables for Our Time" and the self-help parodies of "Let Your Mind Alone!" are every bit as fresh and pertinent as when Thurber wrote them 60-odd years ago. Unfortunately, some aspects of his work--most glaringly his portrayal of African-Americans--have not stood up so well. But one can only say of Thurber what the Duc de Saint-Simon said of Louis XIV: "His virtues were his own, his faults were his times'." The best of James Thurber ranks with the best of Mark Twain, Ring Lardner, Woody Allen and any other American humorist you can name.

You Don't Sweat Much for a Fat Girl: Observations on Life from the Shallow End of the Pool Review

You Don't Sweat Much for a Fat Girl: Observations on Life from the Shallow End of the Pool
Average Reviews:

This is the fourth of Celia Rivenbark's books that I have read; suffice it to say that I'm a fan.
Rivenbark takes no prisoners with her witty essays on topics ranging from Twitter to elementary school science fairs and the cultures associated with them. She pokes fun at Southern culture, sexual addiction and politics as well. Some of the essays are laugh-out-loud funny, some of them are snarky and some of them are thought-provoking. Many of them are all three. She even takes on her family, with adventures featuring Duh-Hubby and Princess-Daughter. (And yes, she shares family secret recipes. Really.)
If you like columnists in the vein of Dave Barry, Rivenbark's work is for you.

Growing Up Sew Liberated: Making Handmade Clothes and Projects for Your Creative Child Review

Growing Up Sew Liberated: Making Handmade Clothes and Projects for Your Creative Child
Average Reviews:

I just got this book in the mail today and immediately dove in to check out the latest craft book offering. I could immediately tell it was a great purchase and after I finished it I'm convinced it's one of the best craft books I've bought to date. (and I seem to buy everyone that comes out) The book comes with a big fat stack of patterns in the back, which I love, I hate paying $$ for a book and then having to draft my own pieces or slog to the copiers to print and increase 37% or whatever... And, it comes with patterns for things I will actually make! It has really great simple clothing patterns for babies to 5t, toy/activity patterns, outside play ideas, I know I will get a lot of use from this book. Perhaps the best thing about the book is the little ideas and Montessori activities that she sprinkles throughout the book. This isn't a Montessori book persay, anyone can use and love it, but I really love the respectful Montessori method and these little ideas and reminders were great to see paired up with loving handmade ideas to make for my family. If you have young children and love to make things for them to wear, play, or use, then definately buy this book!

The 2007-2012 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China Review

The 2007-2012 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China

Written by Philip M. Parker prior to becoming famous for his classic work, The 2009-2014 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China The 2009-2014 Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats in Greater China and its ultimate sequel The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats, this work is primarily of interest to the most loyal of fans and those scholars seeking insight into the various elements that contributed to Mr. Parker's creative emergence as a literary phenomenon.
It is here that we are first introduced to WingSit, the 5 year old peasant boy who grows up to become the noble but passionate wood toilet seat carver, the leading protagonist in this multi edition saga. Parker clearly portrays the various traumatic events during WingSit's formative years filled with abject poverty and abuse at the hand of his milk nurse as contributing factors to his troubled teen-aged years and battle with stuttering and facial ticks. We also understand the deep motivation behind his relentless drive to unseat WongBo, his master teacher, to become the most skilled and famous wood toilet seat carver in the world The 2007-2012 World Outlook for Wood Toilet Seats
It is this reviewers suggestion to start with the other two titles before moving on to this one.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for wood toilet seats across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as 'regions"). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of 'economic population", as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this 'economic" definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city's marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for wood toilet seats. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

I simply could not put this book down. The book is made up of dozens of short stories and essays about buying and selling real estate and about life and society in general (with some political spin thrown in). The author's sense of wit and timing is priceless.
Ranging from a story about walking a group of buyer's into a large mirrored master bedroom occupied by a couple in the midst of a romantic interlude to someone forgetting to move a bed-ridden family member when they moved to a story about someone pulling a gun and opening fire on the author and one of his agent's to some of the funniest things home buyers and sellers say, this book is certain to have something for anyone who has ever sold real estate, bought a home, sold a home, rented an apartment or opened a business.
Five stars!

This is a really cute little book, but a word of warning to those of you who prefer to learn about the idiomatic sayings of American English: this book is more for those who are interested in British English. There are a few sayings which cross over into both British and American English, but it is predominantly British. Still, it's a cute read for a short flight.
