This book is small, with pictures of cozy nooks taken in different rooms (kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc...). It is not a glossy showcase book to leave on the living room table or a design course with stringent guidelines. But for someone who's looking for ideas and inspiration, it is a great little book. The photos are so cute they make you want to step right in and cuddle up with a cup of tea. I have never found another book that collected so many photos of nooks under the same cover.

We all yearn for a cozy place in our homes where we can relax and unwind.Whether it's a bright window seat, a snug daybed, or a secluded corner table, we intuitively seek out alcoves because there is something undeniably warm and welcoming about these small spaces. The Nook Book extends an enticing invitation for you to find such special spots in your home and provides just the right creative boost to help you make them your own. From a breakfast nook where you can sip a cup of coffee while reading the morning paper to a sewing niche in the attic, from a seemingly useless space under the staircase transformed into a practical storage facility to a child's room enhanced with bunk beds, lofts, and other space-saving devices, The Nook Book offers solutions that are both practical and charming. While many homes have nooks waiting to be discovered—a corner of the kitchen, a bench next to the fireplace, or an oversized window—common devices such as a screen, bookcase, or curtain can also set an area apart, creating the perfect alcove. The many diverse ways to create, decorate, and enjoy these lovely niches are fully explored with gorgeous full-color photographs in Karen Hansgen's delightful book.We all desire a space that we can call our own—a place where we can escape to read, rest, pursue a hobby, or simply daydream. The Nook Book shows just how easily the nooks, crannies, and corners of our homes can be transformed into cherished retreats.

The Ride of a Lifetime: Doing Business the Orange County Choppers Way Review

The Ride of a Lifetime: Doing Business the Orange County Choppers Way
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first learned about Paul Teutel, his family, and his business several years ago through my son's fascination with everything motorized and "cool." We wached the reality TV series "American Chopper" together. My son liked the bikes and the characters, and I liked the characters and the bikes (some a lot more than others).
For the uininitiated, Orange County Choppers is a behemoth of a brand built by a unique man who has worked for himself almost his entire adult life. In fact, his biography is so fascinating that I found myself wishing to read more about him and his family; I had to remind myself that this book is a business philosophy book, not a biography.
Mr. Teutel credits his mega-success to relentless hard work and a passion for perfection. Most of his business principles are as well-known and as they are difficult to live by daily. Surround yourself with good people and reward them well, treat everyone with integrity, and embrace change while adhering to core values. The book is peppered with vignettes fo business decisions made, partners acquired and replaced, and descriptions fo situatinos that illustrate the points well. The book also includes a set of glossy photos of Teutel history and motorcycles.
Teutel posits that "everyone" expecte dhim to end up dead or in jail from an early age. His childhood in a very dysfunctional family included an addiction to alcohol and drugs at the age of 15 than lasted 20 years. His father and grandfather demanded relentless labor from young Paul. His father demanded, and Teutel paid, rent to his family during his adolescence. Merchant marine boot camp (at age 18) gave him his first opportunity to set a goal and achieve it.
Goal-orientedness coupled with hard work is a powerful combination which Teutel weakened with alcohol and drugs until he was 35. He credits Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) with helping him achieve abstinence from drugs and alcohol for 24 years.. Demanding sobriety of hs partners and employees changed his iron works business and positioned it for growth. He turned over the iron works business and set to building motorcycles as a hobby in the early 1990s.
Ultimately, he invested his $120,000 retirement in the business that became Orange County Choppers (OCC). OCC is now an international brand operated from a 100,000+ square foot headquarters in suburban New York.
Teutel is ambivalent about his family's involvement in his business. One son took over the iron works and is apparently doing well. Two sons, Paul, Jr. and Michael, work with Dad at OCC. "American Chopper" viewers know the stormy relationship they have. While Dad always wanted his business to be a family business, he observes that things come too easily to Paul, Jr., making him casual if not lazy about deadlines and organization. "Mikey" is a lovable youngest brother with multiple interests and a good sense of humor but little ambition. Dad says that family businesses are the backbone of the economy, but that family can't be managed in the workplace like other employees, and that hurts the family members. He acknowledges the connundrum and apparently sees it as one of the few design problems he was unable to resolve.
One of the book's key messages is that it's never too late to resolve to be better - to become focused, passionate, and goal-oriented to pursue success. Hmm...my now-teenage son might read this book before a lot of other self-help/business success books. That's a good thing.

There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom Review

There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom
Average Reviews:

Only two books I have ever read in my life have made me cry, and this book is one of them.
There are so many emotions, and Bradley is practically a real life kid. Louis Sachar is one of the most talented and original authors today.
There's A Boy In The Girl's Bathroom will touch you, even if you're a tough one---like Bradley. He's a "monster", he knows he is. Until Carla, the new school councellor, comes along and shows him that he can change. Even when no one else thinks he can---even when he himself doesn't believe he can ever be anything else.
(Just don't be mislead by the title or anything. The book's not really exactly about a boy in the girl's bathroom. Louis Sachar is one of the best writers in the world, but I've found the he isn't all that great at picking out titles for his stories.)
And, by the way, very few books can really make a person actually laugh. Louis Sachar has the gift of humor, and adds entertainment and fun to this book.
You should definetly read it.

The Expectant Parents' Companion: Simplifying What to Do, Buy, or Borrow for an Easy Life With Baby
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have never written a review on Amazon before, but this book compelled me to do so because I have found it so helpful. While I agree with the reviewer who said the book is biased (Huggins' preferences for breastfeeding, natural birth, etc. come out loud and clear), it is still an incredibly useful resource for someone like me--a first-time mom who knows absolutely nothing! I have no younger siblings, rarely babysat, and just generally have not spent much time around infants, so I'm going into parenthood with a totally blank slate. For this reason, I've been looking for someone or something that could tell me what is necessary to do and buy and what is not. (Prior to reading it, I couldn't have told you what a "layette" or a "bumper" was, and I certainly would not have known what to do with a "nasal aspirator.") Registering for my baby shower made me realize how saturated the market is with all kinds of gadgets that scream "buy me!" but personally, I can't afford to buy out the baby section at Target. And I'm not so hypnotized by marketing that I believe I need it all. Huggins breaks down not only what products are necessary for your baby's care, but also what might be better to borrow than to buy. She also offers suggestions for making or doing things yourself instead of paying for them (breast pads, for instance, cut out of diapers)--welcome advice for anyone on a budget! The book is recent enough (2006) that its information on actual products, name brands, etc. is totally up-to-date, a fact I also appreciated. I highly recommend this book for sorting through all the overwhelming purchasing and planning decisions, big and small, you will face as you prepare for parenthood.

This is the ultimate, all-around baby guide. Not only does it help you navigate the dizzying array of baby products or gear, it also helps you get ready for baby in numerous ways, from preparing for birth, to feeding your newborn, to sleeping arrangements, and to making your home safe for baby. Most other baby-gear guides make you think you need to build on an extra room in your house to accommodate all the necessary items. However, Kathleen Huggins' years of experience with moms and newborns have taught her what you'll need, what you'll want, and what you can definitely do without.

I read this book with fear as I was apprehensive about flying although I wouldn't say I was fearful. It relaxed me because of the light way it described the flight from start to finish. I learned a lot. It also talked about a specific remedy to calm me down which I took and will say it delivered what it claimed to do. I also learned what to do about my jet lag and although I did not follow the suggestions, I may consider them on my next long trip. I though this book was fun and useful and would gladly recommend it to my friends.

Scat Singing Method Review

Scat Singing Method
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first used this book myself and found it extremely easy to learn the concepts and quickly become proficient scat singing with any tune. I previously tried other vocal improvisation books, but they all were scale/chord/theory based. This method uses an aural/melodic approach which is basically theme and variation. You basically listen to a melody and learn to alter the syllables, melody, and rhythm of any tune and get you scat singing almost instantly. I especially enjoyed practicing with the recorded rhythm section on the 2 CDs.
I later used the method in a classroom situation with my choral students. They loved how quickly they could learn to scat sing on any tune. I plan on using this method in my general music classes. These concepts will help me give an improvisation experience to non-musicians. I highly recommend this book for developing individual skills as well as a teaching method in a classroom situation.

Vocal improvisation can be easily and effectively learned by singers or taught in a classroom situation. For choral ensembles, it is educationally valid as a supplement to the total choral musical curriculum by increasing creativity in individual students, and by enhancing the over-all musicianship of entire ensembles. For individual singers, it can increase vocal skill, musicianship, and performance confidence. This new approach is based on the technique of theme and variation. By using the elements of vocal improvisation: syllables, melody, and rhythm, and applying the following techniques, musical objectives can be met and instant success achieved. In other words, you can learn to improvise right now.

I very much liked this book. It doesn't go deeply into Harley history, it goes just deep enough so that one feels some sense of how American motorcycles, especially H-D and Indian, evolved. For me what's best about this book are the large beautiful photos of the old Harleys, chronologically organized, in original unmodified condition. The old bikes from the mid 30's to mid 50's are truely gorgeous. I can spend hours admiring and comparing photos. This book gives me the urge to own one of these old Harleys.

Ana le Roux was an average thirty something mother who served God, her husband and her two children, the youngest barely three-weeks-old. But on January 5, 2003 one instant sealed her fate in an unimaginable chain of events. Le Roux was involved in a violent head on collision after she instinctively and selflessly sacrificed her life in an attempt to save the lives of her children. The impact occurred with such force that the seat belt fastened around her waste literally cut her in half! After a seemingly endless dialogue with God, she struggled indecisively to make the choice to live or to die. So, she did the only thing left to do; she relinquished her freedom of choice to God Almighty. Almost instantaneously she opened her eyes and started on a journey of emotional, physical and spiritual recovery. In "Cut In Half" le Roux shares twenty three notable miracles and fifteen painful surgeries that have led to her being a healthy, happy and very alive member of society. With titanium in her back and a limp in her walk, she takes every step in life with humility, gratitude and optimism. To Ana le Roux miracles are not an archaic phenomenon of scripture, nor are miracles something that God facilitates when a famous preacher is near. Cut in Half shows how amazing and real God's love is and that miracles are something real and even happen every day.

Organic Chemistry Review

Organic Chemistry

I'm currently teaching a two semester organic chem course using professor Smith's book. In my opinion this is the best organic text currently available. The book and the accompanying solutions manual are almost totally free of typographical and conceptual errors. The organization and presentation are done with marvelous clarity; the book is visually beautiful; and the author communicates her enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject in every chapter. My only minor criticism: I'd like to see a little more historical perspective and acknowledgement of the contributions of the 19th and early 20th century giants who created organic chemisty.

This is serious science with an approach built for today's students. Smith's "Organic Chemistry" continues to breathe new life into the organic chemistry world. This new third edition retains its popular delivery of organic chemistry content in a student-friendly format. Janice Smith draws on her extensive teaching background to deliver organic chemistry in a way in which students learn: with limited use of text paragraphs, and through concisely written bulleted lists and highly detailed, well-labeled 'teaching' illustrations. Don't make your text decision without seeing "Organic Chemistry, 3rd Edition" by Janice Gorzynski Smith.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Beaba B2088 Babycook Book 85 Recipe Cook Book
Average Reviews:

Pros:
- Good, quick, simple everyday recipes. My daughter loves everything I've made from the book so far.
- Useful chart explaining what age you can introduce certain foods at.
- Useful ingredient index explaining the health benefits of various foods.
- There's a nice little "special occasion" dish section.
- Nice, appetizing photos.
Cons:
- Poorly organized and indexed. The recipes aren't organized by age but by occasion (everyday, special occasion, cold day, sunny day...), somewhat randomly it seems; might work for some people but not for me.
- Poorly adapted from French; relies on products commonly found in any French supermarket (petit suisse, jambon blanc...) but much harder to find in the US, and it doesn't suggest any substitutions.

Managing Hedge Fund Risk: Strategies and Insights from Investors, Counterparties, Hedge Funds and Regulators, Second Edition Review

Managing Hedge Fund Risk: Strategies and Insights from Investors, Counterparties, Hedge Funds and Regulators, Second Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This couldn't be timelier. Much water has passed under the bridges on both Wall Street and Main Street since the first edition came out in 2000. As Editor Virginia Reynolds Parker points out, there's been a bear market and hedge fund assets have more than doubled to over $1 trillion dollars. Meanwhile, Parker's book became the standard reference for hedge fund investors. The updated version should prove just as useful and indispensable.
Pensions in particular have been flocking to hedge funds, the fancy and expensive cousins of mutual funds that the media insistently calls "risky". But what does that really mean? There are two ways of using this book. If you're looking for specific information on hedge fund strategies and the hazards they may involve, turn to the appropriate chapter. In the spring of 2005, for instance, when convertible arbitrage returns turned into copious amounts of red ink, you could have read detailed descriptions of how convertible securities perform in the face of various shocks and why convertible returns have been disappointing since 2002 (chapter 10).
If, on the other hand, you want to grapple more broadly with the slippery idea of risk, start with the paper by Robert Jaeger on how to define it, measure it, and manage it. He makes this complex topic comprehensible. In simple terms, risk is expected pain. Assessing it in any situation requires answers to two questions: How likely are the painful outcomes? How bad is the potential pain? Jaeger points out that the answers may not be numerical. Even if you have data, you're not going to understand risk by looking at numbers.
The pieces are written by investors, managers, bankers, and lawyers. The book conveniently bundles these together in sections, starting with the investors' perspective. Mark Anson, the chief investment officer of the California Employees' Retirement System, leads the lineup with a study on how to measure performance. His findings are essential to anybody that invests in hedge funds.
Maybe these intricacies are not for you. In that case, make sure your financial adviser, consultant, pension officer, and foundation chief read this book.

"Merry Christmas. Hug your kids a little tighter tonight. 15 seconds can change everything." ---Tricia Cliff
What touched me about this book is the incredible journey this family went through and they still gave God the glory, even though they didn't know what the outcome was going to be.
Tricia's writing brought to life what she was experiencing day by day while in the hospital. At times, I felt I was sitting with her holding Abby's hand.
What an encouragement this book is to me.

On December 23, 2008, Tricia Cliff (the author), her husband and four children were all involved in a terrible vehicle accident while traveling home to visit family for the holidays. All four children would end up in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Cleveland's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital on Christmas Day. The author began an email journal as a venue to inform family and friends. As the email thread grew...and grew, it became apparent that the author's faith, humor and tenacity during a time of great emotional and physical struggle was truly an inspiration to hundreds of readers, many of whom encouraged her to write a book. This is the product. The memoir contains all the unedited emails and hundreds of responses to those emails received from all over the world. It also includes many black and white photos. This is a wonderful book to read in order to strengthen your own faith or to give as a gift to someone who is experiencing trials of their own. I found this book to be far too general for my purposes. I was looking for much more detailed product reviews. I also found it annoying that Mr. Lipper was so heavily biased toward independent juvenile products stores (e.g. the store he manages in New York). He made himself out to be an expert, given his vast experience in selling baby products to expectant parents. However he doesn't have children of his own, so he has never really tested any of these products in real life experience. Don't bother with this book if you are a first time parent and need the nitty gritty details about baby products. Instead, I'd suggest you buy the Baby Bargains book by Denise and Alan Fields. They have two very young children and have actual experience with the products that they list in their book. Also, they are not biased toward any one type of store. They advise parents to shop around. I would rate the Fields book 5 stars and can't give more than 2 stars to Lipper's.
