I bought this CD and songbook for my daughter and we have loved it! I gave it to her about two weeks before we started potty training as way to talk about the process of going potty and just to make it all a little more fun. She loved the songs and the fun words. She listens to the CD often and we both learned the words to most all of the songs. We would pick one to sing while she was sitting on the potty. The tunes of the songs are familiar to little kids and there are cute, easy to learn words. I have loved this CD and have enjoyed watching my daughter get excited about potty training because of it. This is a must have for those kids who love music.

Painted Chairs: 25 Fresh and Fun Projects Review

Painted Chairs: 25 Fresh and Fun Projects
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I fell in love with the chair on the front cover, and knew that the designs would be right up my alley. I enjoyed the pictures inside, and found them charming and inspirational. The colors are beautiful, and the whimsical designs quite appealing. Every time I look at the pics, I get excited about painting. That, alone, is a thumbs up in my opinion!
However, on a closer inspection, many of the same stenciled motifs were used throughout the various projects pictured, which was disappointing. Granted, they weren't used the same way, but I would have liked to seen more originality or, at least with all the stencils on the market today, more variety.
I am a beginning painter, so I want to know the whys of the methods I'm using. I found the description of how to prepare a chair confusing. The basic prep steps include using primer for previously finished pieces, sealer for unfinished pieces, gesso for all pieces (multiple coats for previously finished pieces), and then the base coat (multiple coats for unfinished pieces) before you start the decorative painting. I'm not sure the necessity of the gesso...why not just go from the primer, to several base coats? Is there really an advantage to that extra step, or is this just the authors' preference? It seems applying several base coats on top of the primer and sanding between would give you opaque, smooth coverage. I would appreciate a bit more insight to the necessity of the gesso.
I also am unsure of what "priming" entails. On page 7 it defines wood sealer and primer. It says the wood sealer is applied to prevent warping and bleed-through of knotty areas, and then directly below it says primer is brushed on to help seal and prevent bleed-through. There isn't enough explanation about the difference between wood sealer and primer, so I'm not sure which I'm to use before applying the gesso. Or do I apply wood sealer, then primer, then gesso, all before the base coats?
It also says to use an oil-based primer on previously finished chairs if unsure of whether the previous finish was oil-based. But, it doesn't explain why. I've since read in other books that this is because the latex and acrylic paints won't stick and will start to peel off, which apparently you may not find out until you've gone all the way to the finishing step. That would be devastating, so I think an explanation of WHY oil primer is a necessity should be better emphasized here.
I bought some gesso, and am using it between the primer and base coats to see if there is a difference in the outcome. I can't tell whether my previous stuff is oil-based or not, so I'm using oil-based primer on all previously finished pieces as a precaution. If there is a way to determine this, that would be great info to include, too.
I also think that there wasn't enough explanation about how to finish the chairs in order to protect the painted design. There are many types of "finishes" on the market. Is a varnish the same as a polyurethane? And what about the description of those...when I go to the store there are amber, yellow, and clear products. Also, are sealers and finishes one and the same?
Since the book appears to target beginners, a better definition of these terms, and what to apply and why would be helpful. Maybe throw in some specific brand names for wood sealers, primers, finishes and varnishes, so I can piece together what I'm looking for when I go to the store.
I give the book a thumbs up for inspiration and for instructions of the individual projects portrayed. If you like decorative painting on furniture, you'll enjoy looking at the pics in this book. However, I have found myself looking at other books to get more concise explanations of what products to use and why.

Erma Bombeck will always be one of my heroes. I still have her picture from the cover of Time magazine hanging on my "Wall of Fame" in my laundry room, along with my college diploma, a picture of the first woman to run for Vice-President, and various cards with special significance from family and friends. When I was a young mom, her writing always reminded me that laughter is better than tears. Whenever I thought that I could not possibly survive this child-rearing thing, I would pick up one of Erma's books and find out that she already survived the same hair-raising incidents and still had brain power. I still treasure many quotes I have picked up from her books. She wrote an article once about children becoming the parents to their own parents. She stated that she knew that was happening the time she hit the brake on her car and instinctively put out her arm in front of her mother who was riding in the passenger seat. How that image tugged at my heartstrings when it happened with my own mother. She wrote about everyday life, common to most of us with humor, poignancy, and great love. I will be giving her books to young parents as long as I live. Her words should be treasured by every generation.

Make a Windsor Chair (A Fine Woodworking Book)

I not only have this book, I have made a chair in Mike's workshop in New Hampshire. Mike has been instrumental both through his writings and teachings in the recent revival of interest in the making of Windsor chairs by hand much as they were made hundreds of years ago. His book is my definitive resource for questions about Windsor chair construction when I am working in my shop. In this day and age where most of our furniture is mass produced by machines using wood composites and other man made materials it is refreshing to see how fine furniture was once (and in certain places still is) crafted directly from the forest with nothing but hand tools and the skilled hands of the chairwright

The Mall of Cthulhu Review

The Mall of Cthulhu
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What a breath of fresh air! I had been slogging through more mediocre mythos for some time now and Mall of Cthulhu was just what I needed. It is a terrific read and I highly recommend it. I first heard about it advertised on Amazon in early 2008; publication was delayed until just recently. It is a nice trade paperback from Nightshade Books, listing at $13.95 (discounted a bit by Amazon) and clocking in at a generous 235 pages, all text. Editing was good; there were no typos I could see. The minibio of the author provides no useful information, but as far as I can tell this is his first book. Cover art is by Scott Altmann. It's OK, but with this cover and this title, my first impression was this was going to be a deliberate attempt at mythos humor. As such, I was not particularly enthusiastic when I started it. This is actually not what this book is about at all. The plot synopsis has minor spoilers, but no more than the blurb on the book. Skip to the next paragraph if that bothers you.
10 years ago, Laura Harker (and all name coincidences in this book are decidedly deliberate) was rescued from a sorority house full of vampires by super nerd, Ted (you know, I'm not sure the author ever mentioned his last name), who had to slaughter the lot of them. Fast forward 10 years and we find Laura is a low level FBI agent who has trust issues, because she cannot confide in anyone about this terrible moment in her life. Ted is a wreck, following his only friend, Laura, from city to city, holding down odd jobs in coffee shops. Whenever he confides the truth to a new girl they think he's psycho and leave (Laura is a lesbian so they stay just sort of co-dependent friends). He is awakened ever night by vivid flashbacks of the bloody events of that night. Ted has sort of settled into Boston, making lattes. He has to serve an obnoxious customer, who doesn't notice when he drops a CD. In a fit of pique Ted pockets the disk. Later, as a favor he brings a coffee to Laura at her job site. When he gets back to the coffee shop everyone has been gruesomely murdered. The obnoxious man is there and demands the disk from Ted. Ted manages to escape, and tries to calm himself while hiding and phoning Laura. Their life abruptly takes a turn into the surreal when they discover a conspiracy of men who are attempting to cause a transdimensional rip with the Necronomicon that would allow Cthulhu access to our plane where he may ravage everything. The bulk of the book describes how Laura and Ted track down the cult to a mall across from the Masonic Temple in Providence and attempt to thwart the machinations of the cult.
This book is by no means a comedy; it is more an action thriller. There is a huge leavening of humorous banter and jokes, but these are all intrinsic to the characters and their personalities. I laughed out loud a frequently but I never thought anything was forced. And what vivid characters! Ted and Laura light up the pages, they are so real. I know people who act like this! Even the minor character FBI agents were deftly drawn. Only the bad guys and maybe the paranormal investigator who shows up near the end were little more than plot contrivances. Usually I have terrible heartburn when HPL's fiction is found to be true; for me it spoils the world building. In Mall of Cthulhu it was an organic part of the plot. Terrific writing with a propulsive plot and sparkling dialogue trumps everything else. Mr. Cooper's book is wildly inventive; his take on R'lyeh is different from any other I have read but is very clever and it works well in this story. I was so captivated I zipped through the whole book in a matter of a few hours. I will happily read his next book, even if it has no mythos connections.
So is Mall of Cthulhu for all mythos fans? Well it should be but of course it isn't. If you like Delta Green and Cody Goodfellow, or perhaps Charlie Stross, then Mall of Cthulhu is for you. If you only prefer HPL pastiches you won't be pleased. If you demand complete apocalypse, look elsewhere. Some readers only care for the dreamy, equally vivid world of the Sesqua Valley. To each their own. For me, I like all mythos stories that are well written. Mall of Cthulhu is an effervescent romp through one man's take on the mythos. I was completely won over and you should be too.

A decade ago, college student Laura Harker was saved from a fate worse than death at the hands (and fangs) of a centuries-old vampire priestess and her Satanic minions. Her rescuer, an awkward, geeky folklore student named Teddy, single-handedly slew the undead occupants of the Omega Alpha sorority house, spurred into heroic action by fate itself, inexorably intertwining his and Laura's destinies. After navigating her way through law school, Laura is now a junior FBI agent assigned to the Bureau's Boston office.Unfortunately, she finds her job involves more paperwork than adventure. When Ted stumbles onto a group of Cthulhu cultists planning to awaken the Old Ones through mystic incantations culled from the fabled Necronomicon, he and Laura must spring into action, traveling from Boston to the seemingly-peaceful suburbs of Providence and beyond, all the way to the sanity-shattering non-Euclidian alleyways and towers of dread R'lyeh itself, in order to prevent an innocent shopping center from turning into...The Mall of Cthulhu!

The Falls: An Inspector Rebus Novel (Inspector Rebus Novel Series) Review

The Falls: An Inspector Rebus Novel (Inspector Rebus Novel Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is one of the longest and most complex John Rebus mysteries, but it is well worth the significant investment of one's time and attention. In fact, the writing is so good, the movement of the plot so inexorable, the characterizations so authentic, the scenes so utterly Scottish that aside from wanting the solution to the mystery, I could have kept reading for another 4-500 pages!
I won't repeat what others have described of the story but add some details I found interesting. First, the Internet role-playing aspect was not only completely authentic (I have a young adult son who keeps me up on these things), but presented with a delicate balance that didn't talk down to the non-Internet initiates, but wasn't incomprehensible either. I almost got interested in the games myself. Second, I was captivated by the intricate exploration of the problems encountered by both men and women when women rise to positions of leadership in traditionally male-dominated fields. It's great that Rankin understands that there are no easy answers and that there are always tradeoffs. I wish the men I knew in my field had as much understanding. Finally, John Rebus is definitely maturing emotionally and spiritually as he matures in years. I enjoyed every flash of insight into his complex person as the plot unfolded. If you haven't read Rankin before, start! You can watch the growth of the author and the characters by starting with the first, Knots and Crosses, or you can plunge into the full-blown alternative reality in this book. Either way, you will emerge glad you invested the time.

Harley-Davidson stunned the world when it unveiled its EL 61, better known as the Knucklehead, on November 25, 1935. The overhead-valve technology was impressive at a time when sidevalve engines were the order of the day, and the engine formed the basis for all Harley Big Twins to follow, right through the Evolution engines of the 1980s and 90s. But what really grabbed enthusiasts' attention was the styling of the new Harleys. The Knucklehead formed the die from which all future cruisers would be cast. Fittingly, Knuckleheads are much sought after by collectors today. This book, like others in the Original series, aids anyone collecting or refurbishing these classic Harleys. It illustrates and describes the correct parts, finishes, and options and trim pieces for all Knuckleheads, from the 1936 debut through the 1947 bikes, the last year of production.

Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt: What Surviving an Airline Crash Taught Me About Retirement Planning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the Forward to Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt, author Tom Scott writes "...I'm urging a return to some basic principle such as living within your means, making sure you understand how money works and, most importantly, managing your financial expectations and emotions."
If some or all of this sounds familiar, it's probably because this is the same kind of plainspoken wisdom about money that your grandma was always so eager to share with you, but which you were probably just as eager to tune out. Coming from a certified financial professional, like Tom Scott, who has spent over 25 years in the trenches building and preserving his clients' fortunes, this kind of shopworn advice about how to get the most out of each dollar and cent you make takes on whole new dimensions of urgency.
Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt offers foolproof strategies for maximizing returns and minimizing losses and brooks none of the get-rich-quick gimmicks or slickster sales pitches that so many readers have come to expect from the likes of Jim Cramer, Suze Orman, Dave Ramsey, Robert Kiyosaki and a host of other, industry approved, financial gurus.
Tom Scott breaks ranks with the Wall Street crowd to unmask some of the most common ways that the so-called financial pros abuse investor confidence every day, whether through incompetence, neglect or out-and-out malfeasance. Time and again Tom Scott has proven himself to be a trustworthy investment "sherpa," or financial insider who actually has the clients' best interest at heart and is willing to go the distance to maintain and create wealth on their behalf.
Tom Scott is a different kind of broker; his message has a friendly, personal touch that is rarely seen in this kind of media. As a certified financial planner and well-known [...] contributor, Tom Scott has helped hundreds of investors plan for a secure and comfortable retirement. Now, with Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt, he is at it again, this time taking his message of prosperity through prudence and practical planning to a broader audience.
Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt is an inexpensive, informative, timely and delightfully readable little guidebook sure to impress and amuse the armchair brokers of the world or anyone else interested in knowing how to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to investing and planning for retirement!

What does a horrific airline crash have to do with retirement planning? Thomas C. Scott saved a dozen lives as a crewmember on a Boeing 747 that crashed in 1974, killing 59 people. When he became a financial adviser he discovered that, like airline passengers who ignore preflight safety instructions, most people ignore the basics in handling their finances, make assumptions that are inaccurate, and leave themselves unprepared for disaster. This is the book you should have read before the global financial meltdown in 2008 and it is the book that will prepare you for the future by explaining how you can fasten your financial seatbelt. Tom Scott has taken what he learned about how we behave under stress and the common mistakes people make with their money and put it all together in this unique, inspiring, and personal look at how easily we can lose what we have when we forget to fasten our financial seatbelts. Scott's hard-earned insights include the value of planning and preparing for the worst. Like airline crashes, most of us think that financial disaster only happens to other people-until it happens to us. As in an airline crash, the survivors of a financial calamity are often paralyzed by fear and unable to see the way out of their predicament. Like flying, our relationship with money is often emotional and tinged with anxiety. It's important to have a trusted adviser on your side, protecting you from those human instincts that interfere with our ability to make good financial choices. Discover important principles that can change your financial life: *The ""rear-view mirror"" investment trap *The difference between investing and speculating *The ""plumage"" trap *Why a big salary is not wealth *How shame and guilt keep us from seeking help *How to find a good investment ""sherpa""

This book is just one of Lijphart's works to provide an excellent analysis of the impact of the shape of institutional structures on the behavior of political systems. A very useful read for anyone wishing to understand the new institutionalist approach to political science, as well as for anyone seeking a more particular understanding of electoral systems and the variables of such systems having a significant impact on the structure of political party systems, electoral outcomes, and legislative processes.

The most fundamental element of representative democracy is the electoral system--translating citizens' votes into representatives' seats. Electoral systems are also the most practical and accessible instrument available to democratic reformers. This systematic and comprehensive study describes and classifies 70 electoral systems used by 27 democracies including those of Western Europe, the United States, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, India, Israel, Japan, and New Zealand. Using comparative and statistical analysis of these systems, Arend Lijphart demonstrates the effect of the electoral formula used, the number of representatives elected per district, electoral thresholds, and five other key features of electoral systems on the proportionality of the election outcome, the degree of multipartisanism, and the creation of majority parties. In the process, he reveals that electoral systems are neither as diverse nor as complex as is usually assumed. The most definitive treatment of the subject since Rae's classic study in 1967, this book is based on more accurate and comprehensive data covering more countries and a longer time-span and uses stronger hypotheses and better analytical methods. The unique information and analysis it offers will make it essential reading for scholars and students of comparative politics.

Riverfront Stadium: Home of the Big Red Machine (OH) (Images of Baseball) Review

Riverfront Stadium: Home of the Big Red Machine (OH) (Images of Baseball)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Riverfront Stadium: Home Of The Big Red Machine" is a compact, 128-page paperback by Mike Shannon (first printed in 2003). It breezily takes the reader on a word and picture tour of Riverfront Stadium, which served as the home of the Cincinnati Reds' National League baseball club for 32-and-a-half seasons (1970-2002).
Riverfront is (was) a ballpark I have very fond memories of. It was considered by some critics to be a drab, lifeless "cookie-cutter" stadium design (or, as some people called it, a "concrete doughnut"). But, in my personal view (which is admittedly a view with a built-in "pro-Cincinnati Reds' bias"), Riverfront was a grand place to watch a baseball game. A first-row green-level seat right behind home plate afforded a sensational view of the baseball diamond (and was a good place to possibly snag a foul ball to boot).
I witnessed many games from the brightly-colored blue, green, yellow, and red seats at Riverfront, mostly during the 1970s, which were the days when Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" was winning baseball championships at a dizzying pace -- six N.L. West titles during the decade of the '70s, along with four N.L. Pennants, and two World Series victories (1975 and 1976).
The Reds added one more World Series-winning trophy during the Riverfront era, when they swept past the Oakland A's in four straight games in 1990. So, Riverfront was certainly a place with a rich, winning tradition during its lifespan.
Riverfront Stadium was renamed "Cinergy Field" on September 9th, 1996. But for most long-time Reds' faithful who fondly recall the "Big Red Machine" days of the '70s, the park will forever be remembered as only "Riverfront Stadium".
This volume starts out by giving us a brief glance at the old (but cherished) Cincinnati baseball park that was replaced by Riverfront in June 1970 -- Crosley Field. Crosley was the home of the Cincinnati Reds for 58 years prior to the building of the brand-new, all-Astroturf Riverfront Stadium. Some nice aerial photos of both Crosley and Riverfront are featured throughout the book.
There are many pictures in this book that I have never seen published anywhere else -- including some images of Riverfront Stadium during its construction phase in 1969 and early 1970, plus some "as-it's-happening" type pics of big moments in Reds' (and Riverfront) history that are captured via the pics in this book.
One such photo shows a jubilant home-plate celebration as Reds' slugger Johnny Bench arrives at Riverfront's home plate after having just clubbed the game-winning, walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1973 National League Championship Series vs. the New York Mets.
Another rarely-seen photo in the book, which occupies space on the very same page (#51) as that '73 NLCS photo mentioned above, is a picture of Cincy reserve catcher Hal King, just after he had walloped his memorable 3-run, pinch-hit homer off of Don Sutton on July 1st, 1973, giving the Reds a dramatic come-from-behind win over the Los Angeles Dodgers (who served as the Reds yearly rivals throughout the 1970s). That King blast began an amazing turn-around in the N.L. standings for the Reds' team, a club which had been floundering up to that point in the '73 season. The Reds seemed to be inspired by the Hal King game-winner, as they rallied in the final months of the season to overtake the Dodgers and win their second N.L. West crown in as many years.
I can still hear then-Reds' announcer Al Michaels' excellent radio call of that Hal King four-bagger -- "Back goes Crawford....all the way back....GONE!!". It was a hair-raising moment.
Of course, when speaking of ex-Cincy radio play-by-play man Al Michaels (who broadcast the Reds' games on WLW Radio for three years; 1971-1973), the "call" that always comes to my mind first is Al's breathtaking, voice-cracking call of Johnny Bench's ninth-inning, game-tying home run off of the Pirates' Dave Giusti in the 5th and deciding game of the 1972 N.L. Playoff series at Riverfront -- "Change hit in the air to deep right field! Back goes Clemente!! At the fence!! SHE'S GONE!!!"
That was probably Bench's most-memorable circuit swat, which propelled Sparky Anderson's Reds to an eventual one-run victory over Pittsburgh in that playoff game (to the collective delight of the 41,887 fans who were fortunate enough to be in attendance that Wednesday, October 11th).
If you ever get a hankerin' to listen to a replay of that Al Michaels' spine-tingler from the '72 NLCS, you can visit Johnny Bench's website (johnnybench-dot-com). Every time the home page of that site is refreshed, the Michaels/Bench radio call is played (in crystal-clear clarity too).
This book's text and ample photography proceed in a chronological manner, with several of Cincinnati's standout players during the Riverfront years being singled out for individual attention throughout these 128 pages ..... including mini-profiles on Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Tommy Helms, George Foster, Clay Carroll, Tony Perez, Cesar Geronimo, Davey Concepcion, Fred Norman, Ken Griffey Sr., Ken Griffey Jr., Pedro Borbon, Hal McRae, Tom Hume, Danny Driessen, Tom Seaver, Ray Knight, Mario Soto, Dave Parker, Eric Davis, Buddy Bell, Jose Rijo, John Franco, Paul O'Neill, Chris Sabo, Hal Morris, Bret Boone, Reggie Sanders, Barry Larkin, Sean Casey, and Adam Dunn.
All photos in the book are in black-and-white (except for the front cover). It would have been nice to have had some color photographs printed here. But even without the benefit of color, many of these pictures are priceless (IMO). And all of the photos in this book exhibit very good quality and crisp detail as well.
---------------
Here are some of the highlights in the 32.5-year history of Riverfront Stadium (many of these memories finding their way onto the pages of this volume).......
>> Just two weeks after opening its gates, Riverfront Stadium played host to the 1970 All-Star Game. And it was a hometown Red, Peter Edward Rose, who barrelled past catcher Ray Fosse to score the winning run for the National League in extra innings.
>> Home-run king Hank Aaron hit the very first homer at Riverfront Stadium, on the Opening Night of the park (June 30, 1970). It was Hank's 577th career long ball. Four years later, Aaron would make even bigger history at Riverfront by smashing lifetime round-tripper #714 on Opening Day 1974 off of Jack Billingham. That big clout tied Henry with the immortal Babe Ruth for first place on the all-time HR list.
>> Chicago Cubs' lefthander Ken Holtzman became the first pitcher to twirl a no-hitter at Riverfront Stadium (June 3rd, 1971), as the Cubbies blanked the Reds, 1-0. And just twenty days later, Rick Wise of the Phillies hurled the second no-no at Cincy's new stadium, when the Reds came up with nothing but blanks against the Philadelphia righthander on June 23, 1971. The Phils won the game by a 4-0 score, with (get this!) the man who authored the no-hit gem (Wise) hitting two home runs as well! It wasn't the Reds' finest Riverfront memory, to be sure. But it was a unique game in the history of the stadium, as Wise became the first-ever big-league hurler to hit two homers while at the same time pitching a no-hitter in the same game. The weak Riverfront crowd of 13,329 saw a true rarity that June night, as Wise's pitching and his bat disposed of the Reds in just 1 hour, 53 minutes. Holtzman, in his no-hit outing just three weeks earlier, also made quick work of his opponents, with that game taking only 1:55 to complete (in front of another meager Cincinnati crowd of only 11,751).
>> Tom Seaver threw the only no-hitter of his great career at Riverfront (June 16th, 1978; 4-0 Reds' win over St. Louis). George Hendrick was Seaver's last out in the 9th inning, on a grounder to first baseman Dan Driessen. A dandy moment for "Tom Terrific", and for the 38,216 in attendance that Friday evening at Cincinnati.
>> Another "no-hit" Riverfront memory (the park's biggest ever) occurred on September 16, 1988, when Reds' southpaw Tom Browning tossed just the 12th perfect game in major-league history -- a 1-0 shutout over the Dodgers. Browning (who had an 18-5 record in '88) needed just 102 pitches to mow down all 27 L.A. batters he faced in the quick time of 1:51. Attendance was 16,591. .... Browning's "perfect-o" was just the fifth perfect game ever thrown in the history of the National League, and only the third one in the N.L. since 1880 (with the others in the "modern" post-1900 era being spun by Jim Bunning in 1964 and Sandy Koufax in 1965).
>> Pete Rose made baseball history several times on the Riverfront playing field. He collected his 3,000th career hit there on May 5, 1978, vs. Montreal. And he became the all-time ML hits king on the same field seven years later, when his single to left field off of San Diego's Eric Show on September 11, 1985, pushed Rose one hit beyond Ty Cobb. It was base hit #4,192 for Pete.
>> "Johnny Bench Night" at Riverfront on September 17th, 1983, was a grand evening for the sellout crowd of 53,790 (a record for a regular-season game at the stadium), who gathered to say farewell to 17-year veteran "J.B.", who retired at the end of that '83 campaign. The Reds lost the game to Houston, but Bench delighted the packed house by swatting a well-timed home run during the game (which turned out to be the last of his 389 career blasts).
>> Unfortunately, the Reds were never able to sew up a World Series-winning season at Riverfront Stadium, with each of the Reds' three Series-clinching wins coming on the road, rather than at Cincy (1975 at Boston; 1976 at New York; and 1990 at Oakland). .... But the Reds did clinch several of their...Read more›

How to Convert Volkswagen Bus or Van to Camper Review

How to Convert Volkswagen Bus or Van to Camper
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a decent book, but the idea that you get a good idea of how to convert your own van to a camper? Not even close. This is basically a book made by going to a place that builds RV's out of vans and following some people around with a camera. There is some good info to be sure, but if you are looking for ideas of how to come up with your own layout, why types of conversions the average person might be able to pull off without professional help etc.. forget it. There is little if any information of that type. You can get some ideas about safety issues in the case of venting carbon dioxide/monoxide etc.. and running propane lines there is a lot of warnings about NOT doing that yourself..
I gave it two stars because it's two stars worth of information, but it does get that information off to you. The pictures are easy to see, very illustrative. If you are looking for a book that you can follow some pro's around as they convert a van and after reading it have absolutely no idea where to start... this book is for you.
Also if this "how to convert your van or bus to camper" book has any information on where to get materials to do said conversion, I never saw it. It's a conversion done by leisuredrive in the UK so if you are in the United States and thinking of contacting them, they are an ocean away folks so don't bother.

Viva's Pinups: Bullet Bras and Backseat Betties: The Photographic Art of Viva Van Story Review

Viva's Pinups: Bullet Bras and Backseat Betties: The Photographic Art of Viva Van Story

If you are looking for a pinup book that contains the same boring backdrops and themes, this is NOT the book for you. Viva van Story creates a story with every image she captures, and these stories aren't always light and cheery. However, this is what makes her art have so much more depth than the cookie-cutter photogs out there just trying to make a buck. After purchasing this masterpiece full of beauty and erotica, I knew I had to shoot with her and shoot with her I did! My fourth time shooting with her was less than two weeks ago. She is so passionate about her work and it is evident in this book, as well as the stunning images her and I have created. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an open-mind and a great imagination. Be prepared to go on a journey but be warned, you may fall in love with Viva just like I did. ; )

Human Factors Design Handbook Review

Human Factors Design Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Human Factors professional that owns the 1st addition, shortly after purchasing this version (2nd edition), I questioned my wisdom.
This book is about 200 pages shy of the original and not surprisingly repeats many of the same information as it's predecessor. Unfortunately, it gives us little more than dated information with a bit of new stuff tacked on.
What really dissappointed me was that the anthropometric data that is provided here, dates back to that of the original's 1960's data. What is the point of a new edition? The census data stated here is so dated it is ridiculous, both in composition as well as age.I wish I had known that this data was not updated prior to my investing in the new edition. I would not have purchased it.
I question the usefulness of data published in so recent a book based primarily on Air force personnel of the 60s. That type of data had it's day & was appropriate at it's original publishing. Today's Human Factors professional needs more diversified data that is more international in it's scope. For that matter, I'm certain 1960s air force personnel (who are screened for height and weight) hardly represent the year 2000 demographics of the United States much better.
I found it interesting that the same graphics that may have been the best you could do in the original were repeated in this new document. Couldn't they refresh some of the look, clean up some of the old graphs. As the original was, this document is a mix of font styles, graphics and inconsistent data presentation. Does this truly represent the user of the document well? I recognize presentation is not "everything" but on a second pass of the same information you could dress it a bit better at least.
The major addition predictably is the data surrounding workstations and computer usage, however, I'm questioning it's usefulness relative to the anthropometric data also here. Is this new data based on aged human measurement data too? Will it only fit the 1960 US air force man and woman?
I think this book would have been better printed as an addendum to the original version costing about $25. This way the workstation data could be added plus any items that are new.

Big Book of Camaro Data, 1967-1973 (Motorbooks Workshop) Review

Big Book of Camaro Data, 1967-1973 (Motorbooks Workshop)
Average Reviews:

I bought this book and was disapointed with it because of all the incorrectly restored cars in it. I wanted a book that had pictures showing how a correct car would look but this definately not the best book on the subject. GM Decals in the door Jambs (wrong), spare tire rims painted the wrong color, Hose clamp details wrong, and some other miscellaneous details. Buy something else by MacNeish, Colvin or Antonick. All of those are better IMHO.
