Reach beyond the traditional show-and-tell approach for teaching oral language, creative imagination, visualization, sequential memory, and listening skills by incorporating storytelling into your curriculum. The authors show how to use a number of popular forms as bases for children's storytelling, including nursery rhymes, fables, how-and-why stories, tall tales, and folktales and fairy tales. Children learn how to use crafts, pictures, readers theatre, and flannel board materials as springboards to storytelling adventures. Numerous patterns are included for activities, and a bibliography of resources for use with storytelling rounds out the book. Grades 1-6.

Child's Play (6-12): 160 Instant Activities, Crafts, and Science Projects for Grade Schoolers Review

Child's Play (6-12): 160 Instant Activities, Crafts, and Science Projects for Grade Schoolers

I actually picked this up at a library sale and my preschooler and I have been steadily working our way through the projects which have proven fun and interesting. The book is fairly well-organized, covering indoor projects and paper crafts, science projects, sewing and fabric crafts, writing and thinking projects, quick and easy costumes, and outdoor projects and activities. Many of the materials required for the projects can be found within the home, and are inexpensive. I like to keep my child entertained through projects that either get her to use her imagination and creativity or exercise her critical thinking skills, and this has become quite a nice resource for that purpose (sure beats plonking in front of the TV for mindless entertainment!). It also gives me a chance to participate in something fun and creative, and share the experience with my daughter.

Learning Through Art: The Guggenheim Museum Collection Review

Learning Through Art: The Guggenheim Museum Collection

Learning Through Art is a wonderful teacher tool to expose students to art and artists through fun filled reading, writing, and observational activities. Many students have never visited or explored a museum. Learning Through Art gives students a feeling they have been able to visit a museum to discover and learn about art, art history, and art of many cultures. I share this book with students at the beginning of every school year and they love the activities.

Play, Laugh & Learn: Celebrate the Seasons: An Easy-to-Follow Stand-Up Guide to Dozens of Fun and Stimulating Projects Review

Play, Laugh and Learn: Celebrate the Seasons: An Easy-to-Follow Stand-Up Guide to Dozens of Fun and Stimulating Projects

This is a great, easy to use book filled with new craft ideas. It is divided by seasons but many of the crafts could be done anytime. It has some standard crafts like pinatas but also has some fabulous new ideas. There is a chinese dragon, a tidepool with fun water creatures wow-the way these are made was really cool!), several games you build yourself, hindu bracelets and lots of other things.
It has LOTS of bright pictures and easy to follow, step by step instructions, with extra photos and close ups. I liked that it has crafts from several different cultures, because they look fun, not because they are PC. The Diwali candles were especially fun for my kids to make. It gave us a reason to look up Holidays we wouldn't normally study.
My favorite part of this book was the little extras on many of the pages. Some of them are tips, some are extra projects to use with the craft on the page and some are interesting facts that go with the craft.
This is a very nice, easy to use book and nearly all the ideas are things my kids would actually make.
The only thing I didn't like was the occasional use of words we don't see very often. Roll a satsuma sized ball-hmm...how big is a satsuma anyway? But for the most part, it is still easy to follow and guess based on the clear pictures that accompany such instructions.
